Creation

Hags are exclusively female and can only reproduce by mating with a male member of another species which the hag will often slay afterward. Children born of this union are always female and are called changelings, and are often given into foster care by their hag mothers disguised as a normal woman. When the offspring reach puberty, the mother hags might visit their daughters several times and after several rituals (provided they are not interrupted), transform them into hags. Those who are not transformed by their mother remain changelings and must find their own way. These changelings throughout their life receive “the call,” a hypnotic spiritual voice that beckons them to travel and discover their true origins. Changelings who ignore this call choose their own destiny; those who heed it discover their “mother” and may come into great power by transforming into hags themselves.

The other reported way hags reproduced was far faster, involving the hag simply devouring human infants after stealing them from the cradle and giving birth to, again, an ordinary looking child. Normally this was only done rarely, but it was said that hags sometimes made use of this method in short succession to kickstart their own covens, either as members or masters, or believed based on ancient lore that eating certain types of children, such as twins, triplets or the seventh child of a seventh child, would grant their own spawn rare magic.

Either way, the rituals involved in causing the transformation of a changeling into a hag are very difficult, and more often than not results in the death of the target to be turned. The time and effort needed for even the most powerful of hags to form a full coven is typically measured in centuries, the largest of which can take millennia to construct. Even after a coven of hags is formed, individual hags cannot resist their capricious and deceitful nature, and the inevitable fatal infighting ensures that there are never too many of them at any given point in time.

Physiology

Hags are witch-like beings who utilize dark magics to wreak havoc in the world. There are many variations of Hags including Night Hags, Annises, Green Hags, Sea Hags, Bheur, Bog Hags, and Dune Hags, each having unique physiologies that reflect their habitats. The powers of hags were as variable as they were, but there were several common abilities between them.

The decrepit frame of hags belied their supernatural strength and swiftness, for the crones can crush smaller beings one-handed and easily jump obstructions in their path. They all have magic to some degree, commonly being capable of creating illusions to hide their true forms, and they themselves are naturally resistant to magic. In addition, hags often know curses and other wicked rites that allow them to scry, prophesize, manipulate the weather, and place curses on those that annoyed them. Despite their supernatural natures, hags, as well as needing to sleep, require sustenance to live. Ravenous hags can devour entire humans in only ten minutes, preferring their flesh to others and consuming that of demihumans or creatures like orcs only when needed.

The true lifespan of hags is unknown, and if not literally immortal they are effectively so for many races. At minimum they live for several centuries and at maximum many millennia, with lifespans comparable to dragons. Hags that had grown very old became known as Aunties, although they could also achieve that respectable title by adopting or birthing several children, joining a powerful coven or placing themselves directly under an even older hag, usually carrying the title of Grandmother.

Psychology

Hags were horrible witches of wicked intent and ancient origin, dark fey tied to primal forces whose foul magic and mysterious malevolence haunted fairy tales and nightmares. Evil was at the core of what defined hags, an inextricable part of their identity. Some saw themselves as representatives of malice and malignancy, paragons of corruption who took unbridled joy in creating misery and misfortune for the virtuous and content. Due to their destructive tendencies they made many enemies: humanity and their allies as well as dragons will hunt down these creatures and kill them on sight.

Hag Society

Groups of Hags are generally referred to as covens though they tend to prefer solitude. Hags have no desire to be tied down by others, taking pride in their independence from the rest of the world, including from other hags. Nonetheless, despite how different they could be, all hags recognize each other as kindred spirits, members of a kind of sinister sisterhood by which they are undeniably connected.

Even though hags don’t like each other, they are still members of their shadowy sorority and as such have to abide by an ageless code of conduct when dealing with one another. For example, they always have to announce their presence when entering another hag's territory, bring gifts when entering another hag's home, and keep oaths made to other hags, at least so long as their fingers weren't crossed.

Hags & Religion

Hags usually worship the dark goddess Delisha or the Spider Goddess, though it is possible that they worship other deities as well, often twisting and purposely misinterpreting their teachings to suit their own whims.

Hag Types

Night Hags

The Dream Realm hags, the most vile and nightmarish of the hags. Using objects called Heartstones, Night Hags will often traverse the dream realm in astral form to drain their victims of their life-essence. They’ll return to the same victim several times in their nightmares before they finally succumb to her fiendish magic.

Annises

The most physically powerful and feared of the hags, annis hags were ferocious savages with nails and teeth like iron. They are usually egotistical brutes who see strength as virtue and appeal to simple-minded beings like children, fools, or the otherwise uneducated.

Green Hags

The most duplicitous and hateful hags, green hags use illusions and temptation to lead others to destruction and tragedy. These forest femme fatales othen seek to poison that which was pure and drag down the civilized world into barbarism.

Sea Hags

The indisputably ugliest of the hags, sea hags are decrepit piscine women of such hideousness that it is said one could die from looking at them. The aquatic hags seek to defile and invert all that is beautiful.

Bheur

The unrivaled masters of winter witchcraft, bheur hags are blue-skinned beldames that make cold seasons even harsher than normal. They are cold-hearted crones who delight in the greed that bad conditions bring out.

Bog Hags

A variety of hags that dwell in swamps, bog hags are predators that hide behind a familiar face. After lying in wait below the water and killing their victims, the sinister body snatchers steal their skin, and sometimes their identities.

Dune Hags

The dune hag looks like an extraordinarily tall but decrepit female human, dressed in filthy robes and a ragged burnoose. Her skin is a sickly greenish-brown, her hair iron-gray, and her rotting teeth brown and black. It is said that the kiss of a Dune Hag can enthrall her victim, making them a willing servant until the bond could be broken by exposing what she really is. To avoid direct conflict Dune Hags prey upon people while they sleep.
