Regarding Arrest and Sentencing

  • Arrests can be made only by the Sheriff or his deputies. Force can be used if the suspect refuses to come peacefully. Once the arrest has been made, the Sheriff's Office will retain the prisoner in either the office itself, or the jail until the trial. The Sheriff's Office will arrest criminals only within Larket borders. Arrests within other cities must be enacted by that city's law enforcement, or the Larket Sheriff's Office upon written consent of the other city's ruler.
  • For Larket citizens, trials will be held only for major offenses. The Sheriff's Office retains the right to punish minor offenders in accordance with the laws.
  • For foreign criminals, a trial will be held to determine the date of their release from prison after a minor offense, as well as to determine the punishment for a major offense.
  • A trial will consist of the Queen or her designated representative and three advisers. The royal vote counts as two, and each adviser counts as one, thus eliminating any possibility of a tied vote. A majority vote is all that is needed to enact the sentence; it is up to the queen and her advisers to decide the severity of the punishment. The Sheriff, or his representative, will state the crimes of the accused, along with any proof of the accused's guilt. The accused then may or may not, depending on the nature of their crime, be given a chance to defend themselves. Then, the queen and her advisers will come to a decision and announce it to the assembly. No appealing or questioning of the decision will be tolerated.
  • At the discretion of the queen and her advisers, a criminal sentenced to death may be allowed a trial by combat; a fight to the death between the criminal and the queen's chosen champion. This is by no means a right, and is generally only exercised for entertainment purposes.

Deputy Code

  • The Sheriff can recruit any number of people to serve as his deputies. The number is set by the queen and varies according to need.
  • The deputies can make arrests according to the laws listed above, but must submit a full report to the Sheriff.
  • The deputies have full access to all areas of Larket aside from the queen's own chambers.
  • Any deputies found to be abusing their power may be reported to the Sheriff. If found guilty, their sentencing falls solely to the queen.
