- Named for the pair of elongated bladelike canine teeth in their upper jaw, this large predatory cat can reach sizes of up to 220 to 436 kg (485 to 961 lb) in weight and 120 cm (47 in) in height. It is more robustly built than any other extant cat, with particularly well-developed forelimbs, reduced lumbar region, high scapula, short tail, and broad limbs with relatively short feet. It is an ambush predator that conceals itself in dense vegetation since its limb proportions are similar to other forest dwelling cats, and its short tail does not help it balance while running. An apex predator, the Saber-Toothed Lion primarily hunts large mammals, thought it has been suggested that the Saber-Toothed Lion is a pure scavenger that uses its canines for display to assert dominance over carcasses, but this theory is not supported as no terrestrial mammals recorded are pure scavengers.
