RP:Signing of Kain as Larket Blacksmith

From HollowWiki

Objective

Meeting held at the Knights Training Field with Kain and Jacklin.

Discussion focused on the job interest of Kain as the Chief Blacksmith in Larket. The meeting ended with Kain signing on to the role in Larket and preparation for a Smithy has begun.

Actual Meeting

Kain approaches the Queen for his interview. Stopping about ten feet in front of her, he takes a knee, bowing deeply. "I have come to seek employment as a blacksmith, milady."

Jacklin could have quite easily been overlooked amongst the various metal-cloaked figures darting and dashing through the area. The sharp, sloppily appointed cadence of steel meeting both wood and its own again would be heard resonating around the city-state for many hours to follow. Yet the Queen had a particular marking in the lazy black hood which cascaded back against the top of her head. Usually pulled down to cover creased features, the elder instead kept clear so that steely sight could indicate non-verbal directions to the trainees. At the approach of Kain to her side she allows regard to shift in greeting, “You’re Kain, yes? Your letter indicated you do good work.”

Kain nodded, as he rose. "I be a Hammerhand, milady. That be, one born inta a family 'o smiths, 'n raised ta be one. Began my trainin' soon as I was old 'nough ta work a bellows, 'n b'gan my apprentaceship at the age 'o 15. Completed my apprentaceship last year, 'n was granted ma own forge, but I signed it over ta a cousin 'bout two months ago when I come up ta see the world. Haven't worked a hammer 'n anvil since then, but I don't think I be too rusty after only those few months. Armor 'n weapons I ain't trained on, but most any normal blacksmithin' job I kin do. Whitesmithin' be tough fer me, as gold 'n silver be so soft, but I kin learn, if needed."

Jacklin nods in the proper places as Kain speaks. Jacklin waited but a single beat before returning with her own thoughts, “Safe to say I know very little about smithing. I’ve bought armor and weapons, watched them being made, but I’d never know how to begin such a task. All you say sounds impressive to me. Perhaps because I lack the smarts or you’re just an impressive man. As the Larket smith you’ll be making the weapons and armor for my troops. Larket has one, if not the best military organization in Hollow. I personally train the men and know mostly what they’re in need of when it comes to weaponry. We deal a lot with steel and other material. A bit stronger stuff for my elite squads. You’d be in charge of filling the orders and working with my captains to figure out what exactly the troops need. Does that sound like something that’d interest you?”

Kain strokes his beard a moment in thought, then nods. "Aye milady. Only weapon I've made is my knife, 'ere. But I know the techniques needed ta make a strong weapon 'r good piece 'o armor. Hard ta spend over thirty years as 'n apprentice ta a master Hammerhand without learnin' bout weapon 'n armorsmithin' techniques. I'll request a week ta practice 'n make certain that I remember everythin' right, before I be willin' ta pass any blade or protective garb ta any troop though, just ta be safe. Ye kin understand, me request, I be sure. I kin start when ye be wantin' me, milady, 'n if there be a forge here fer me ta use, I kin start refreshin' meself on the weapon 'n armorsmithin' right away." Once again, he kneels, bowing deeply to the noblewomen.

Jacklin places a hand on the shoulder of Kain’s now-kneeling figure, “I’m not that kind of Queen,” she urges quietly, “and there isn’t a need to bow. I’m simply a brawler who got lucky. I’ve a warrior with an extra title. There isn’t a thing special about me, sir.” Gesturing toward the western path as the speaks again, “I’ve got my architect working on plans for a smithing area as we speak. It’ll have a forge, work station, and anything else you’d need to work properly. I’ve made plans to have it back to the west. They’ll start work on it quite soon I believe. Until then, as you spoke, I’m sure you’ll want to train a bit on your own time. It would give us enough space to get your workshop up and running. Your pay is a thousand gold per week. More when larger orders are made. So what’ll it be, Kain?”

Kain rises and nods. "That sounds better than I coulda hoped for. After signin' ma forge over ta my cousin 'n walkin' on the family buisness ta see the world outside the mountain, I been banned from usin' the family forge." He chuckles. "Still, they promised that if I could prove me worth as a smith, they be willin' ta make me a powerful weapon, 'n full protective armor. Havin' me own shop, 'n bein' the prime smith fer a city like this. Aye, milay. It be an honor ta work fer ye." He looks over toward the area where the smithing area will be and smiles. "Kain Shannarra, Prime smith 'o Larket. Oi, but that be soundin' impressive," he laughs. "Consider me ta be at yer disposal, and more 'n ready ta get started." Removing his right gauntlet, he extends his hand.

Jacklin smiles at Kain with a few gravely chuckles as she clasps his hand with her own, “A genuine pleasure to meet you Kain Shannarra.” Releasing his hand she pulls fourth a small sack of gold and palms it into his freshly-shaken hand. “It’s a high title indeed. Larket is a fine city and you’ll earn respect just having such a city attached to your name. I’d know more than anyone.” Giving the man a wink she presses palm against chest in indication, “You can call me Jack. My real name’s Jacklin but most people don’t call me that. They’ve usually a few choice words for me. In any case, I’ll let you know how the building is coming along with letters from my courier. I welcome you officially to Larket, Kain. I hope you’ll be a welcome addition to the town.”

Kain smiles. "I'm sure I will be. I be raised as a hard worker when it comes ta me craft, 'n could be called a perfectionist. Still, one raised by a master 'o the craft don't get ta make many mistakes." He chuckles and shrugs slightly. "Well, I'm gonna go have a look at the area ta be my workshop, then see if I can't rent a forge 'n get back inta the swing 'o armorsmithin' as that be harder 'n weapons. My thanks Jack. I be proud ta be a part 'o yer growin' city."

Jacklin dips her head cordially to her new blacksmith and departs from the area with a final phrase, “Enjoy the city.”
