History of the Future

From HollowWiki

For the moment, this page contains a brief explanation of why there is no magic in Hollows future. I hope to eventually develop it into some kind of story, however, for now, it's just going to be a 'this is why' page.

  • Magic in the future:
    • Magic in Hollow is a finite resource. A simple way to think of it is in terms of mana, while the resource in Hollow is not called Mana, it has yet to be descovered and named, so for now, mana will do. Mana is needed for all spells, without it, spells can not be performed. As spells get cast, mana is used up. In Hollow, the realm is not producing new mana, a result of a scar in the fabric of the realm produced by some of the earliest wars of the gods. The upshot of this is that as spells are cast, the mana gets used up, but not replaced.
    • For the moment, there is a plentiful supply of Mana, and it's not likely to run out any time soon.
    • Fast foward to the future. Over the years, spells were cast, for a time, the magic users became more attuned to the mana, being able to cast more and more powerful spells, however, eventually the spells started to weaken. The magic users continued with their craft, however, as they died out one by one, their numbers started to dwindle. With the depleted levels of mana, newborns were finding it harder and harder to tune into what was left. With the widespread loss of magic, technology started to take over. And soon Hollow entered into it's first industrial age. A few magic users remained, some blessed with unnatural long life, some newborns able to perform nothing more than palour tricks with the remaining mana, but even these started to die out. The last magic user turned out to also be one of the first. He died during the second technological age of Hollow when the mana could no longer support his existance.
    • Obviously this has a few implications, such as not being able to go into the future and cast massive spells, or bring people back from the future due to the mana being depleted to the point where it makes it difficult for one person alone to return.
