Talk:Materials

From HollowWiki

This page is pretty much pure win and needs to be continued. I lack the finesse to write a decent description however so I will use this space to remind any passing Wiki'ers of it's importance.

Seeing that admins have altered this page in the past, can we assume that the descriptions shown here are official and can be used in roleplay? I know there've been some disagreements in the past of pages describing materials that weren't sanctioned by the admins. Just want to make sure before I start thinking about planning to use any of them in rp.--Lokthull 01:32, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

  • Probably roughly safe, although if you find any egregious loopholes we'd have to act like any good GM to plug them. ;) --Cyllarus 01:48, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
    • You can also assume that if something is listed as 'rare', that means you're not likely to find huge scads of it lying about. :P --Cyllarus 01:49, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
      • And these are only "specialty materials," right? For example, there is average steel that's just like real world steel, then there's these dark and true varieties that have special properties. Also, concerning those steels in particular, can a player just make up something to pass for those and fire them off in an hmail to be approved, or do a similar step with possible additions to the list? The metals bit doesn't pertain much to my current character, but I think there could be some interesting additions to the list, even if nobody checks it ever. :P --Lokthull 21:57, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
      • Yes, standard materials appropriate for the era still exist (steel, but not aluminum or titanium, etc). If you want to add new materials, I'll add a Player-suggested section to the list. Materials added there may or may not get adopted officially. If they do, we'll move them up to the approved list.--Cyllarus 02:19, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
      • I agree that only era-appropriate materials should exist, and so I have to ask...if there is no titanium, why were all the armors in Schezerade allowed to be created? If titanium doesn't exist, can we do away with those items? --Roldan, sometime at night, 5 May 2011 (My time zone)
      • Because I didn't bother to check to see if any items like that already existed before opening my yap?--Cyllarus 03:30, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
      • But this brings up a good point, though. I'm no scientist, but Wikipedia tells me that it takes significant scientific processes to extract titanium from the materials its found in, using chemicals and equipment not available in Hollow. Shouldn't we consider a revision of those items, or something, to keep Hollow as grounded as possible? I mean, there are plenty of other metals that could be used; true steel seems to be an avian thing, maybe it could be that instead. --Roldan, too early in the morning, 6 May 2011
      • Could also feasibly be a side-effect of the magitech required to keep floating cities aloft. I have not yet addressed materials in my work on consistencizing the items of Hollow. Yes, that's a word, I'm sure of it. I will keep it in mind when I get to that stage. --Cyllarus 14:25, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
