Sea Bats (not to be confused with the charmingly ugly bat-fish) are large, pale-furred flying mammals with wide translucent wings and long legs tipped with grasping claws, which they use to skim the ocean’s surface for fish, shrimp or anything else they can catch and carry to their high rocky perches on seaward facing cliffsides.
Also known as Moon-bats, their ghostly shapes can be seen gliding over the ocean’s surface, particularly when the waves are calm and the moon very bright. The pigment-free membrane of their wings allows the moon’s light to pass through, preventing oceanic prey below from fleeing winged shadows.
Sea Bats may be found in all coastal areas, with occasional species variation. Whereas the eyes of these bats generally reflect green under the light of Valaane , a larger variety dwelling on the northern coast of Vhys are more often seen when the red glare of Ar’Nukh is bright in the sky and their eyes appear to naturally shine a corresponding shade of red.
The Vhysian bats, theorised to be a divergent subspecies, appear to be in part cannibalistic and possess a secondary eyelid which mimics the green eyes more usual to Sea Bats. Presumably this mimicry aids them as a camouflage ruse while hunting the smaller, naturally green-eyed bats.
Another variance found in Vhsyian colonies is the unusually large width and capacity of their needle-toothed mouths, leading to the colloquial appellation “Toadflap” among northerly farming communities.
Some purely anecdotal reports suggest the Vhysian bats will steal smaller livestock and occasionally children, but no bats of a size capable of lifting such weight are presently on record.
