Background:

Uncle’s a blacksmith, but loses a lot of that money betting on fights. One day, he was on a roll and could’ve made a fortune if he’d only quit while he was ahead. He said double or nothing on a big contender who should’ve won, if the little guy hadn’t known what he was doing. So there’s this big debt to an even bigger orc. It would take the rest of his life to work it off, but the guy wasn’t that patient. So what did that uncle do? Offered his little niece instead.

It wasn’t nothing personal, so Helle didn’t bother holding a grudge. Her new master kept her too busy, anyways. Once she took her brand, she got to changing piss pots, setting up targets for training, being the target, grunt work nobody but slaves were good for. But she watched, she learned, and she worked her way up to playing interpreter. Every spare second she had, she spent training just like the fighters at the arena she loved watching. Soon, her master noticed and pit her against fighters his buddies owned. As her opponents got tougher, she adapted, learned.

The little Soft-Skin grew up hard and earned her way into that arena. The outcomes of her bout: freedom or death. The other fighter became her hated enemy, an obstacle standing in her way, like all the rest. It wasn’t her first kill, but it was the sweetest. That next visit to her uncle had a happy end, but that poor shop hadn’t been her home in a long time. Too different to stay, she moved on to bigger and brighter things.

Now she looks forward to finding out what that means.
