Questions

  • Would it be alright to Write a couple room descriptions where the room has no exit, a dead end? Labyrinths do have those after all. Just a simple question. ~Allanon
    • I'll have to look at your block of rooms specifically to see if you have any. Odds are actually good that you don't, due to the way the labyrinth is constructed. ~ Cyllarus
    • Alright, Ill leave it alone until I hear from you directly on the matter ~Allanon
    • Your current batch does not have any. In general it's best to avoid directly referencing specific exits in the room description anyways. That allows me to move room descriptions around freely if I need to. ~ Cyllarus

I am not a veteran room description writer, so my room descriptions are liable to be rough at first. Suggestions are always welcome.

  • Labyrinth Entrance (note: the builder here was highly skilled, so it's more polished than a medium-skill builder would get)
    • The temperature in here is several degrees cooler than the outside, and sunlight dimly penetrates the passage from the entrance. The floor is smooth but not slick, with no apparent wearing from the passage of previous interlopers. The walls appear to be made of solid blocks of a glossy black rock, held together with a dark gray mortar. From within these bricks, distorted reflections of your face gaze disturbingly back at you as you move down the passageway. Overhead the ceiling forms an arch of black rocks, the peak of it lying invisible underneath a deep covering of shadows. The path winds deeper into the earth, curving around until the light of the surface world is lost from view.

Ill post two examples of Rooms Im doing for the Labyrinth.

This room was much like the others. The same old aura of misguided instincts seemed to fill you as you continue onward still in question of your sense of direction. The cave like wall that you had followed for some time now showed no change. The same old rock and ebony colored materials that had been forged into its creation by some sort of magic would continue to glisten in the light as you passed. You resisted the urge to run your hand upon it once more. Finding this maze more and more troublesome you wonder if you may spend the rest of your days here but then, keeping hope that the exit was around the next turn you continue onward, hopeful for the end of this massive Labyrinth.

You enter the area and like before you would think that you haven’t moved at all except for the fact that you had just walked here. The room looks similar to the others you had entered and even the stone craftsmanship appeared to be upon the same level. You may run your hand upon the walls cave like surface, it wasn’t smooth, but rough and somehow the odd material that made up the wall seemed to reflect a light which always caught your attention in this most dark of places. Keeping your hand upon the wall you suddenly pull it back quickly as a sudden throb surprises you. Looking to your finger in the dim lighting you see fresh crimson, blood. The rocks appeared to be sharp in some areas, the material for the walls both stunning and somehow dangerous. Now you knew better and would be careful of such dangers in the future. And now somehow you suddenly wonder if you had entered this area before. You stop and turn around, second guessing yourself. This was due to the aura that was emitted throughout the entire maze. Somehow your sense of direction was being altered; in some areas this aura was stronger than others. Shaking your head perhaps you change your direction once more and go a different way, confident now that this may be the correct path…but is it?

  • Shouldn't rooms be in present tense? I mean, all the rest of Hollow's rooms are written in present tense. - Sanlig
  • I wrote mine as they are because to me, it is unknown which way a character may go or what they may do while in the room. So everything is only possibilities. I do the same in my writing in Hollow though :P ~Allanon
  • Right, so considering as how everything is only possibilities, shouldn't it be present tense, suggesting by said tense that the next chouce of behavior is for the reader to decide? - Sanlig
  • I dont know, its just how I write, both online and in my novels. Let us see what Cyll thinks of it. If its not satisfactory then I wont be able to continue writing for I know not any other way. ~Allanon
  • It's not my personal style, but there are rooms written in the future tense in Hollow elsewhere. I'm okay with the individual styles and variations in the rooms. This place is going to be large enough to accommodate different styles. I may edit slightly to smooth transitions, but I highly doubt I will go to the effort of re-writing into my style. Not much point in getting volunteers if I am going to rewrite it. ;) ~ Cyllarus
