Sveltran sat quietly in the kelay tavern, the heels of his black leather boots hooked on the bottom rung of the barstool. His grey eyes peered over the popped-up collar of his black leather duster at the other patrons, taking in his surroundings. Since arriving in Kelay only days ago he had done almost nothing but drink, however tonight it seemed he could hardly even motivate himself to do that anymore. Anyone who may have been watching the spiky haired vampire over the last few days..perhaps even the past few years might have thought him depressed, but in truth his life was so absolutely full of boredom that the drudgery was now seeping from every pore of his long dead flesh. He rested his forehead on the counter in front of him and closed his eyes, his hand still wrapped around his first (untouched) drink of the night. A long suffering sigh escaped his lips as he sat contemplating the point of existing in a world where nothing interesting ever happened.

The calling of a town crier echoed through the doorway as the local boy shouted the latest news in the land. Typically all Sveltran ever heard was “Nobles did this, or insurgents did that.” Or information about the latest sales in the nearby shops….More drudgery. Today however he heard something new. “The Craugmoyle guard has issued a warning to all travelers and merchants with intentions on entering Ventruil! The underground tunnel is impassable! Entering the tunnel or meddling with the obstruction is inadvisable and is done at your own risk! Multiple guards and merchants presumed dead!”

Sveltrans eyes shot open. Perhaps he would finally get entertainment! He slapped his open palm against the bar, kicking his shoes off the stool as he did, and spinning around to face the entrance. His lips curled into a smile as he half jogged to the door. His eyes now shimmered with excitement as the wheels in his head began turning. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but the undead didn’t go so easily. As he passed through the door he whispered quietly to himself. “This should be interesting..”

You rushed into the dark tunnels. His thick leather boots slapped against the cavern floors and echoed back down the earthen halls as he sprinted to his goal. In the nearly lightless expanse, his pupils grew to cover his irises till his eyes looked as black as the shadows around him. Upon seeing the monstrous door his mouth fell open in wonder, this would CERTAINLY be more interesting than his philandering in the forest. He curled his bottom lip between his teeth in anticipation, this would be a study for the ages. He reached into the unreasonably deep pockets of his duster, feeling around for a moment before pulling his pale hand back out. Resting in his palm was what appeared to be a small golden pocket watch, his surface embossed with decorative designs depicting a dragon standing amidst a burning city. He clicked a small button above a hinge at the top of the device, releasing the lock and allowing it to swing open. Inside the device behind a thin layer of glass was a small hovering bar, one end red and the other blue. In his hand he held a magical compass, a keepsake from the wife he had locked in a crypt weeks ago in an effort to avoid his honey-do list. While most people would have very little use for such a device, as sensing magic itself was commonplace, this device was designed to help find the center of an individual magical field. He cautiously paced towards the door for his first test. He brought the device close to the door and began moving it side to side, searching for the points from which the door may have been enchanted. Those who are unfamiliar with enchanting may be unaware of the focus points used. Typically during the creation of an exceptionally large enchanted item, multiple gems, or precious metals are strategically placed throughout to keep a craftsman from having to cast extremely high level spells in the creation. By using multiple focuses, you could not only create the object with greater ease, but it would be more difficult to destroy the overall spell due to the fact that you would have to break its strength multiple (diminishing) times in order to overcome it. 02:32:08Aetherclaw :: The door stood omniously. Not sound in the now abandoned save for the now vampire. The runes that were present had faded once again. Carts strewn about, products rotting, the area had that eerieness about it that just didn't seem to make entire sense. From no one point a field if one searched could be found, and from within the no singlular area might be found. If the magic were in the air it read everywhere, but in the case of door it might have been silent, and void. As if the thing literally the opposite of magic entirely or rather it was not affected by it nor did it run through it. The sense of silence no doubt intangible and every curious as is confusing.

02:49:03You ‘s eyebrows crunched together as he looked on in confusion. He pursed his lips and began shaking his compass vigorously and slapping it against his palm. “Damned thing.” He held it next to his want to test its effectiveness, The red point immediately shifting to point to the top of the handle. He once again heald the device up to the door, and let it lightly touch the surface. The metal bar inside immediately fell out of place and hit the bottom of the inside of the device with a clink. He gasped and looked at the door again awestruck by the destruction of his wifes compass. “Oh shes gonna be maaaaad….” Reaching back into his pouch he pulled out an empty vial. Closing his eyes he laced his fingers around the glass ad focused. A bright blue light peaked out between his fingers as he whispered a word of power, the vial filling to the brim with water. He sloughed bis backpack off, letting it fall to the cavern floor with a crash. Pulling back the string that held it closed he dug around inside until he found a few herbal components typically required to create a sage mixture. Dropping some powdered leaves into the water he began focusing again. He poured mana into the vial until it began to glow blue again, however this time the light lingered. The fluid in the vial became more and more viscous as he continued to pour in his energy. Finally he raised the vial in front of himself to inspect it. Dabbing his finger inside lightly he tasted the mixture… a bit more minty than he would like, but otherwise a viable catalyst. Reaching once more into his pack he pulled a thin piece of straw from within affixed with a tuft of cotton on the end. He dipped the tip into the vial and pulled it out again, the liquid now seeming to be about the consistence of paste. He carefully began drawing a letters on the door with his “Magic paste”, the old elven calligraphy scrawled out across its surface in an attempt to draw a miniscule amount of power from the impenetrable wall for later study. If it worked, the chemical in his vial and that on the door should both turn suddenly black.

04:47:24You raised his hand to his chin in thought. Following the results of his previous test he reached again into his pack retrieving a mahogany box, roughly the dimensions of a bread box. He shuffled closer to the door on his knees before sitting on his feet in front of it. Reaching his slender fingers into the breast pocket of his shirt, he pulled retrieved small leather bound notebook whose covered was dyed red, and Flipped through the pages until he found a blank page. Opening the lid of the box, he revealed an array of tapered stones, roughly ¼ inch diameter on one side, and tapering to a sharp point on the other, each taper being roughly 2 inches long. Varying pockets throughout the tray had wooden handles rather than a full stone taper tipped with smaller versions of the various rocks. One might presume that these were more valuable substances, and having a full taper would be prohibitively expensive to maintain. Taking each taper in hand he lightly grazed the surface of the door multiple times with each, watching to see if any cloud leave a mild scratch on the surface. Working his way through the materials, he scribbled down the results f the test onto a notepad, marking “F” next to every failed test, and hoping to write an “S” next to one of the items if he could determine the substances hardness. He tested everything from standard talc to diamond, and then studied the surface carefully to see if any blemishes appeared.

04:51:41You gathered the results of his findings and his belongings and rose to his feet. Dusting his knees free of the dirt from the cavern floor he trekked back up the tunnel until he was a good 50 meters from the apparently impenetrable device. He closed his eyes and began channeling mana into his hands until they began to tingle and a thrum could be heard in the air around him. Feeling the raw energy gathering at his fingertips, he thrust both hands forward, cupping them together at the wrist with his finger curved slightly towards his palms. A weak bolt of lightning blasted from his hands towards the door, disappearing harmlessly in the air before making contact. Sveltran chuckled to himself, not having expected the weak spell to actually make an impact, but wanting to collect all of the data he could. He looked around the cavern with excited wonder, searching for a tool that might aid him for the final test. His eyes stopped on a 4 foot long stalactite that hung from the cavern ceiling. He cocked his head to the side and paced slowly around it from ground level. “This will do” he said, raising his right hand towards the stony column. He swiped his hand through the air in a chopping motion towards the ground, whilst raising his other hand from his side until his palm was flat in front of him facing the ceiling. An updraft of air exploded from the earth beneath his feet, swirling around the hanging rock. A light crunching noise followed by a loud CRACK resonated through the chamber. The Stalactite fell like a four foot long bullet, barreling towards Sveltans head. Wincing, he raised his left hand higher, the torrent of wind coalescing into a circular barrier above his head. The stalactites decent slowed as it neared the barrier, but it was not slowing fast enough. Sveltan grunted and strained his will over the elements, pushing with all his might against the falling rock…finally it halted, suspended in the air just above his head. With a sigh of relief he stepped a few feet to the side of the heavy stone. “nooot my brightest moment…” he muttered to himself. Refocusing on his task, he hefted the stone to its side with some carful manipulation of the airflow surrounding it. “Well….here goes nothing” he stretched his right hand out to his side at its full length. Whispering an incantation, the air in the chamber began to grow warmer. A small red spark popped between his fingers, and then sputtered until his whole arm seemed to catch fire. A swirling tornado of flame now whipped around his appendage, however as the fire grew stronger, his focus on the wind holding the heavy stalactite began to falter. Bearing down and curling his toes within his boots, the inferno started weaving itself together. Jets of fire wrapped around each other like strands of red silk, braiding themselves into a thin wire. The wire began curling over itself, wrapping itself tighter and tighter and slowly trailing away from his shoulder back towards his palm until all that was left was a baseball sized ring of white-hot flame. A thunderous shout ripped from his throat as he launched the ball at the flat side of the pillar of rock who’s point was aimed at the door “ITS SCIENCE B..” before he could finish his statement, the concussive force of the ensuing explosion launched him off of his feet, vaulting his tumbling body down the darkened tunnel away from the ominous door with many sickening thuds, and a few crunches as he impacted on the rocks. With the same force however, the stalactite blasted towards the door like a stone missile, a flying battering ram set to make a colossal strike against the potentially immovable object. The last thing he thought before falling unconscious was “well that was stupid….but at least its not boring….”

As the Stalcite impacted with the door, it did make impact, but failed to leave a mark, the impact however did bring one benefit the runes appeared along the side walls of the door. Glowing for second, increasing the in light and strength before diminishing following the vaporization of all that had tried to impact the door. Which did not include the vampire who was knocked away. If he managed to wake up in time he might have caught a glimpse of the runes that were visible still before they faded off out of power. The complexity so rich the runes might have looked like lines upon lines upon lines (aka bar codes over bar codes: appearance wise)
