RP:Field Research for Surgery Tools

Summary: Rusilan ropes Linn into making a new surgeon's kit for the Frostmaw Clinic. After discussion of some details, Linn is given some documents to study and they settle on allowing him to see the process in action to better guide his work.

Smithing Supplies, Frostmaw Fort

Linn currently sat at a table set up clear of the forges in the room, his backpack leaning against the side of the giant-sized chair as he was idly looking over a hunk of some glassy black substance in front of him. His appearance could be described as odd, more or less; reflective mithril plating covered most of his body, the joints and flexible parts given ample room and covered with scale and mail instead. A couple pieces were notably missing from the arrangement over his forearms which were tented up over the material. After a little bit he took it in his hand to begin tossing it again before a smith, waiting on his metal in the forge, called over to chide him. “Don’t freeze yourself again with that!” he teased before the enchanter rolled his eyes. “Hey, I know –exactly- how that happened!” he responded with faux indignance as he shook his head. “It won’t happen again… or at least shouldn’t.” Well, he could be getting teased for worse things.

Rusilan pads into the smithy on silent paws looking around with icy blue eyes the sparks drifting around whirling out from her and back to disappear in her fur and out again.

Linn continued tossing the black ice up and down in his hand before raising his other as if to display a spiraled mithril ring that went around it. His eyes flickered back and forth between the objects until what appeared to be sparks from hot iron flitting through the air tore his attention back away. “Ehh?” he muttered as his vision shifted farther out to the door to find the feline that seemed to be some kind of focus for them. For a moment, his head tilted and he just stared, the confusion soon shifting to a keen curiosity to the nature of the phenomenon. Interested as he was, he didn’t make a closer move, either out of respect or due to his task that he was more or less roadblocked on, but stuck on nonetheless here.

Rusilan looks around for someone who doesn't look to busy and pads tord Linn his movement having cot her eyes.

Linn’s eyes tracked Rusilan all the way to the table, the staring continuing regardless of how rude it might be considered. As she approached he eventually waved his free hand from where it was on the table. “Uhh, hi?” he awkwardly greeted her, the oddity of the sparks just continuing to catch his interest and throw his attempts at being properly social.

Rusilan nods politely "Hello do you work here?" Waves her hand to indicate the smithy sparks of healing magic trailing her had even as they settle to glitter in her fur as she stops at his table.

Linn shrugged. “Kind of. I’m not actually a smith. Just working with this stuff for a related enchanting project.” Another toss of the black ice in his hand before he set it on the table. She’d find the substance incredibly cold to the touch should she take it, enough to cause rapid frostbite against skin. Slowly he closed that hand into a fist and opened it again to flex the muscles; despite the glove protecting him it did get pretty damn cold. “And what brings you here?” he questioned in return.

Rusilan lays back her ears "The clinic has no surgery kit. It looks like they had one once but the healer there can't even remember ever seeing it. " huffs in agrivation, " so I am looking for a mage smith. To forge a new one. " Shakes her head. " How they managed this long without even noticing it was missing I don't want to think."

Linn cocked a brow, his hands dropping to the table to fold over each other. “Surgery? Like, cutting into people and putting them back together kind of surgery?” Fingers began tapping on the table as he thought. “I’m not exactly a smith, but I can work with equipment that’s already been made, or…” his eyes seemed to focus on something far in the distance outside the room. “make something –really- out there.” A pause before he let out a huff. “I haven’t worked much in the details of surgery either, and that’s something I feel would be important. If you need tools though, I’d be willing to learn. Because I want to make those tools good if I do.”

Rusilan hops up to set on the table facing him in the process plucking up the black ice with claw tips and moving it farther over. " have diagrams from the mage library the trouble is they are such fine delicate tools that the prosigers for care and cleaning can damage metal over time. That is part of why I need a smith-mage they need to be crystal, and they need to be tuned she a gifted healer can focus through them."

Linn’s expression broke with a wide grin the moment he heard ‘crystal’. “If you’re looking for tools made of gem and stone… I can do that just fine actually. But as far as tuning them if we do that, I think that depends entirely on who is going to be using them. I can probably manage just about any shape though, and if we need a large amount of gemstone quality material, I know a couple people that could help us out.” As if to make a statement he reached down to retrieve a mithril mask and set it on the table, the open visor for the eyes filled with what appeared to be glass with a still-flawless polish. “This is solid sapphire. Some of the toughest stuff I’ve worked with. It can probably handle just about all the physical elements of surgery if properly shaped.”

Rusilan Purrs softly and holds out her hand to shake the sparks swirling again "I am Rusilan Katic Kicirta Vear'tos. "Given they did not know they where missing after all this time they had best be tuned to me I maybe the only one around trained to use them."

Linn swished his mouth on the particular details of use. “If they are for the clinic in particular they should be able to stay and be used there.” Options and tradeoffs were rapidly weighed against each other. “Having a personal set of tools could very powerful, but they will also be limited in availability.” Something else rested in the statement, a note of suspicion. “Unless you plan on manning the clinic full-time something like what you’re asking won’t be for the clinic, it’d be for you.”

Rusilan flicks her tail tip " I am looking to replace the clinic's set at this time. I will be working there part time they will steyr with the clinic. I have a few tools of lesser quality that are mine alone. I do plan to get a full set to take with me at a later date. Getting the clinic fully stalked and back up to full function is the priority at this time. " Lay's her ears back and leans in the friendly healing sparks melting away. " I will tolerate your doubts of my honor in this because you don't know me. But be clear a trade honorably with all who have not crossed two lines. The first is to try to harm me or mine, I will put up with someone coming after me long before any one I claim. And two any one who harms a cub of any race around me may as well have slit there own throat. In under those conditions my prey can expect nether honor of mercy. " leans back her ears perking up and the sparks coming back but she doesn't purr and her icy blue eyes make the weather outside look warm.

Linn watched Rusilan closely as she spoke, his mouth swishing in thought as the words came. “It’s simply a question of availability. I’ve been in a clinic enough times to know something will always happen at inopportune moments. These tools should not make sacrifices compared to conventional tools when wielded by someone else. There’s a lot to balance making these it seems, time included. If we have to go fast, tuning them to you may have to wait for now because that’s another thing I will have to learn. Once I get enough experience or knowledge to know what we will need I can try making something, we’ll see if this tuning is necessary for completion then. If it isn’t… we can look at that at a later time for you.” His voice had almost grown flat as he picked through the details and necessities, but it wasn’t entirely emotionless. Something in it was highly determined, focused exclusively on gathering all the information and directing it to making a proper solution.

Rusilan nods and starts purring again. " you are right of course a good set soon is better than a great set a later if it is needed soon." Shrugs out of her pack and opens it to take out a set of scrolls with diagrams, descriptions, and lists of what a surgery kit needed. " like I said I gathered this stuff from the mage library. "

Linn nodded in agreement before looking over the diagrams, eyes mostly flickering to images and their captions before reading the occasional text. His gaze at the paper was nothing less than highly critical. “Yes. This is a good start.” The reading continued before a finger began idly tracing different abstract motions that resembled a range of the actions, whether it was supposed to be cutting through flesh and paring it apart, or wispily tracing loops to connect something together. That, and at some points he just went over the size of the text. “Definitely a delicate process. I’m going to want to know more though, more than just what these papers can tell me.” The criticality intensified, turned to thought. The wheels were beginning to turn in his head. “If you have decent quality, if only mundane tools, or know someone who does, I want to at least see a surgery in detail. With what I’ll get from reading these closer, I might be able to make something good.”

Rusilan shrugs " like I don't know anyone else with a set at all I have a parts of a set but they are low quality. Mostly made from descriptions out of other things by a blacksmith. I have only used the scalpel because it is the only thing of any quality and only because the smith was good at knifes. "

Linn pursed his lips at the news of the present equipment. “Good for opening someone up, but we’d have to put them back together too.” He leafed through the pages until he found a recognizable image of stitching. “And as much as I can do with gems, metal’s harder.” Again his finger began tapping rapidly on the table in thought. “If you don’t have any luck finding any other supplies that could work like the stuff in these papers I can try replicating the conventional tools and cut them down to their final designs afterwards.”

Rusilan shakes her head "these are copies of historical documents I think the Healer's guild give up on surgery long ago but you can't rely on magic in a big emirgacy more than five people to heal and you have and your healer is down for the count and a lot more people are left without healing. "

Linn shook his head lightly. “If I can figure out the details, I can shape the tools well enough to work simply on their physical properties. No magic in the execution needed, though that isn’t entirely ruled out. I haven’t figured out how to turn my own magic towards healing but… with a little play through the physical world you can make magic do more than expected. Use fire to make wind, cold to make a solid object, force to move earth. It’s almost always a matter of precision. But I need to know what I’m doing to do something like this.”

Rusilan looks thoughtful "I won't do surgery on anyone who doesn't need it. But I am willing to do so. It would be a mix of healing magic and surgery seeing as some of the tools are missing. And no major surgery with what I have. I am not risking lives just to demonstrate. "

Linn returned the thoughtful gaze as he kept looking towards the papers. “That’s fine. People get wounded often enough in these lands we don’t have to rush it at all.” A weak ‘heh’ came as he couldn’t help a little amusement at the general morbidity he had encountered over his time out here. “But if it tells me some of the details and subtleties of fixing a wound the hard way, it will be worth it.” With a glance at the black ice his eyes flickered over to the giant smiths. Yeah, he wasn’t doing his work here. Yeah, he was taking up more work elsewhere. And YEAH, it was all for Frostmaw, so they could can it. Suddenly his eyes went wide as it hit him that he didn’t even really introduce himself. “And I think I forgot, but I’m Linn. Looking forward to seeing what we can do with this.”

Rusilan purrs and nods " Well the Linn until some needs my skills what should I gather to help you in your work? With this and what ever else you will be stealing time from to help me?"

Linn went back to looking over the papers as Rusilan spoke again. “Whatever you can get together to do a physical healing. I’m just looking for knowledge, as far as the tools themselves? I’ve got the gems we’ll need, and if we don’t… I’ll get some more.” When asked about where his time was going he shrugged. “People I’m waiting on. Domestic life. Chances are it won’t be interfering with anything. And this project… It’s kind of what I do for a living. So it’s not a problem.”

Rusilan blinks slowly " I have what I will need other than a patient. "

Linn offered a single nod. “Then we wait. I’ll come by the clinic when I’m up here in the city to see if there’s anything happening. With everything going on someone’s bound to get hurt. It isn’t a war anymore, but... construction isn’t the safest thing either.”

Rusilan nods " I managed to capture some of the guilds blue eyed ravens I could send you a message?"

Linn shrugged. “That will work. Drargon at the tavern could also keep a message for me if need be.”

Rusilan said, "okay that works for me"

Linn looked over the papers one last time before organizing them together to put them in his pack, leaving the black ice on the table. When he spoke again his voice was in the faux-low as if hiding but not really hiding what he was saying from the giants. “Well, I’m actually not getting anything done with the ice right now, I need someone else to work on that, so I think it’d be best if I get to looking at these papers. I’ll see you soon.” With that he got up from the chair to shoulder his pack and head out.

Rusilan shoulders her own pack and hops of the table "I should go do some hunting any way. Thanks for the help and I owe you a favor. "
