Voxiath, the Undying Lord King of the Wanstoo Marshes.

In life, Voxiath was a powerful mage, reknowned for his ground-breaking research into new spells and magic. His meticulous methods of spell research were held up as the gold standard to new apprentices. He never suffered an out-of-control alchemic reaction or explosion throughout his entire career.

However, in his old age, his attentions shifted. He was no longer as interested in new research, but started to become more and more obsessed with control over all aspects of his life, not just his magical experiments. Using his powers and the help of his loyal retainer Byaun (a mage of no small ability himself), he was able to gain political power over a small province, but every time he attempted to expand beyond his boundaries, no matter by what method, he was stymied by the local forces and rulers. While Voxiath was a genius at spell research, he had no gift for strategy.

After every failure, the pair of them would retreat back to their workshop to analyze what had gone wrong, and how they could counter it next time. Using Voxiath's vaunted genius at planning and research, they would investigate every possibility and devise a detailed plan that would inevitably lead to their success. Each time, it would take them longer and longer, and they would develop larger and more convoluted plans, attempting to cover every contingency, counter every defense. And every time they would be outmaneuvered and their forces would be crushed.

Eventually even their combined powers could not delay the inevitable ravages of old age, and they determined to take the only option left to them: Lichdom. Unfortunately, while the process was successful, the change into undeath only intensified their burning desire to control and plan for every single possibility, and their plans, formerly cumbersome and over-detailed, became positively labyrinthian in complexity. Only the combined mental prowess of two undeniably brilliant men, augmented by all the magical powers they could muster, was capable of understanding the plans that they came up with now. If their plans had been written down, it would have taken the space of several shelves' worth of encyclopedias.

Their lichdom also had another effect - they were no longer aware of the passage of time. Without the need to eat, or sleep, they remained shut up in their mausoleum, working on their plans again and again, refining every single detail into uttermost precision, while outside, the world changed. Countries fell, and new ones rose to take their place. Rulers died and ascended. The technology and strategies of warfare changed. And over time, the name of Voxiath was gradually forgotten, although some of his innovations are still remembered and see use in workshops across the land.
