History

  • Asaphetida, a Drow Ranger, lived in the nightmare called Trist'Oth in the Underdark. After serving as Secondboy to a house for six decades, Asaphetida and his elder brother Kenmarin decided to leave the Underdark and venture to the Surface world; however, their venture did not come without sacrifice. On the night of the brothers’ planned escape, the Matron Mother of their house discovered their plan and became furious, seeing the act as blasphemy towards Astrala. Since the Matron Mother could not risk falling into the ill favor of Astrala, she captured Kenmarin and sacrificed him to the spider goddess while forcing Asaphetida to watch. His dearest friend, and the only kin he considered family, was slaughtered by the dagger of his own mother! Asaphetida was amazed and disappointed at how cold hearted his family and all his Drow kin really were. How could he ever trust his kin again? How could he know if all the tales of the evil Elves and Dwarves and especially the Deep Gnomes were true? He knew he couldn't come to a straight answer in Trist'oth. He would have to escape the evil city of Drow, but how? He saw what his family had done to his dearest companion on the night of their failed escape. How could he escape all the evil he witnessed in his six decades of life? He pondered this question for many weeks and finally came up with a solution: he would have to kill the Matron Mother.
  • Asaphetida knew he would never accomplish this task alone; he would have to find someone or something to help him. But who would dare defy a Matron Mother? Then he finally realized that any slaves and male nobles would gladly aid an organized rebellion, and with no daughters to take the throne, a male would become ruler of his own house! Asaphetida was grateful for his understanding of the Drow society that allowed him to come up with this solution.
  • That night he gathered all the male nobles together to explain his plan. All the males agreed. The next night he gathered all the slaves together and explained the plan. Drow slaves will do anything to survive. They know they are on the lowest level of people in all of Trist'Oth. If the male nobles were to take over their house then they would serve the males just as obediently as they had served the Matron Mother. The night of the attack was a quiet one, all of Trist'Oth stood still and dull. Asaphetida approached a group of the males and told them when to attack. He said “Not until I face her myself; give her a chance to resign, and live the life of a slave herself!” The males all laughed at the idea of seeing their Matron Mother cleaning the walls of 'their house'.
  • Asaphetida confronted the Matron Mother, who was well aware of what was going to happen that night. She looked on him with disgust. Asaphetida said, “I give you one chance mother; one chance to surrender, curse Astrala herself and become a slave to your very own house. Do this and you shall live.” She looked at him and burst into laughter. “You pathetic little boy!” She screamed at him. “I am a Matron Mother, I shall never do such a thing!” She muttered a quick chant, and Asaphetida was sent flying across the room. In a mix of anger and pain he yelled, “So be it then! You shall die tonight Mother!” Just as fast as the words left his mouth a group of male nobles marched into the room. The Matron looked horrified; never had she thought that all of the male nobles of her house would defy her. The smile upon her face rapidly changed into a look of terror and fear. Asaphetida signaled the leader of the group in a secret hand language, “Do not give her any mercy”, he said, “Make her suffer!” As he left the battle scene, the sounds of battle raged on. Asaphetida knew his time to escape was now. He went to the closest window and levitated down to the ground. He looked back upon his house, knowing the ruling council would not allow his house to live; a smile widened across his face as he was happy to see the accursed House fall.
  • Ten years later Asaphetida found his way out of the seemingly never ending tunnels of the Underdark. He still carried all of the burdens from living in Trist'Oth, all the hatred to his Drow kin, the sight of his dear brother being sacrificed, and the happy thought of his house being destroyed. Asaphetida then saw the sun for the first time. It burned his eyes, but he did not realize the pain, for this was the first time in his 70 years of life he felt free...
