The Living Grimoire

The Front Cover

What was once a face was no more. Gone are the roundness of cheeks, the ridge of a brow, and the slope of a nose; those features had long been lost to knife and spell, the things's face now being as flat, as singular, as a front cover. Its eyes have been sewn shut, if the faded line of a scar was any indication, and the pigment-less white skin that covered each socket show signs of hot, searing fire. Its mouth fared little better, its lips taken by knife or fire, and what was left sewn and seared just as its eyes.

Its skin, what of it was seen or shown from the old robes it wore, was of equal parts grotesque and marred. Letters of languages both common and uncommon, both ephemeral and timeless, were cut into its body. Some cleanly as tattoos and others seeming to be cut by claw and teeth, the alphabets crawled over fat and muscle, over mended wounds and suppurating sores, able to connect with its peers or be bound to their distant kin when need to communicate arose.

The Contents =

"I was a servant, and I was happy. My days were spent in my Lord's library, pouring over each text to find what he was after. I tended to his tomes, his scrolls, his wisdom, as best as I could, but time wore down bindings...it bleached the finest inks...it took from him, word by word, letter by letter, his knowledge.

I was a servant, and I grieved for his loss. I wept when the text was too broken to copy correctly. I mourned when the tome's spine had degraded too the point where neither sinew nor glue would keep it whole. So when the Lord came to me with a suggestion --- that was what it was. Not a command, not a plea, but an offer ---- I assented to it as soon as it left his lips.

I was a servant, and I was made to serve. When my bones broke, they healed. When my skin puckered and wounds opened, they would close. When my back broke, it could be healed. I would be lesser, yes, but I would still be. I could be made anew. I could be formed into memory. I could be blanketed with knowledge and lose none of it.

I was a servant, and now I am...The Living Grimoire"
