"The Bloody Cost Of Construction"
The article headlining this paper provides lurid details of the various acts of harassment and violence that have been directed towards the construction crews who had been working on the intended expansion and renovations of the necropolis. These incidents culminated in the disappearance of an entire construction crew within the heart of the necropolis.

The disappearance was ultimately discovered to be a murder, or as the article details it, a slaughter. The undead members of the lost construction crew were found maimed, gargoyles found shattered, and there was an excess of blood and tissue suggesting that the other more edible members of the crew were devoured. The paper even morbidly speculates on worse possibilities - as well as hinting at strange symbols found at the scene, though it's vaguer on these details.

This vagueness also pertains to whatever source may have leaked the details of the investigation–though, there are a number of quotes from various construction crew members which seem to confirm these events, as well as from the crew boss, Larry Mar.

Archmage Lanlan was amongst those rumored to have been present when the vanished crew was eventually discovered. When pressed on the necropolis' recent assault on Vailkrins citizens, he had this to say,"In the wake of this dreadful incident, it is paramount that we condemn any act of violence that undermines peace. Such atrocities not only sow discord but also threaten the fragile balance we seek to uphold. As we navigate these troubled times, it is imperative that leadership remains resolute, ensuring the safety and harmony of all citizens, including those living in the Necropolis. It's a moment for introspection, to evaluate the effectiveness of our governance, and to work collectively towards a more secure future for all in Vailkrin. If they are protesting the allegiance with Larket--perhaps even if not, but especially if they are-- then their complaints deserve to be heard."

"Renovations Halted/Riot Zone Declared"
This article is more a proclamation than anything–a statement that, with the confirmation of the prior events, there is now a complete cessation of any renovation activity and fiscal support towards the graveyard denizens. It further acknowledges the intensifying hostility and violence that the necropolis has displayed, not only to the vampiric and main city natives but also to travelers abroad. This, in tandem with sightings of vandalism at the grand temple of Vakmatharas, have led to an area ban on non-essential traffic and visitors, , with the area being declared an unsafe region. Enjoyers of the Black Library may, at least, enjoy some reprieve from ill-tidings, given the institution yet retains its independence and still sees some visitors, albeit through less conventional entryways than its physical portal.

”Diplomacy Deadlocked”
This editorial seems more speculative in nature, focusing on the continued difficulties in finding common grounds or a point of compromise with representatives of the necropolis - with the writer seeming particularly keen on highlighting that some of the demands, (such as the reduction of non undead denizens to second class citizens) - seems to be a naked power grab under the guise of ‘reparations’. It also highlights the continued difficulty in navigating the increased number of ferals–in part due to escalating efforts by radicals to ensure their ‘freedom to act upon their impulses’.

”Colette Nasar, Under House Arrest?!”
This article is headed by a rather unflattering portrait of House Nasars’ matriarch, and details that the rumored arrest of her and her house members is not only true, but that an official court date is being set, due to a number of charges both local and abroad. There are a few speculations on potential witnesses, the most notable being Blaire Nasar, given her seeming ability to travel with impunity. The writer also theorizes that Quintessa Blackwell might be called to the stand, after a leaked document surfaced pertaining to a temporary rescind of her exile--a measure to take effect one week prior to the trial and continuing therein.

"A War On Comfort, An Invitation for Curiosity"
While the paper seems to have warmed slightly on the nature of the accord, on the influx of supplies used to expedite the restoration of the city, and even the presence of Larkets peacekeepers. It then goes on to underline the way those benefits have since evaporated, leaving Vailkrin in a better situation, but in a far more uncertain landscape. There are various musings on what might happen next, each of which culminates in a different recipe for making consumed blood stretch further in case of rationing.

Despite these rigours, House Markan seems intent to throw their hat into the fray- having publicly announced a Faire dedicated to the advancements it has made over the last year, including some they promise will revolutionize the city. To that end, they’ve also extended an invitation to other would-be visionaries with a mind to progress alchemy to the very edge of innovation.

Curious Constellations
There's a segment detailing a dispute between house Markan scholars as to whether or not a recently discovered constellation is in fact new, or an older one which had disappeared due to obscurity, or some other complication.

Necromancer Guild Silence Casts a Long Shadow of Uncertainty Over Vailkrin
No news is bad news when it comes to seeking relief after a disaster, and the citizens of Vailkrin are beginning to notice the lack of support coming from the leading authority of Dark Magic in the region. The Necromancer’s Guild, an institution whose history is deeply entrenched in the history of Vailkrin as a whole, as been deathly silent in the aftermath of the controversial Larketian/Vailkrinese trade agreement, a move that faced public backlash not more than a few fortnights ago. Since then, Larket has been embroiled in a war against Cenril, putting pressure on foreign and domestic powers alike to take a side, a call that the Necromancer’s Guild has taken as a sign to further distance themselves from Vailkrinese politics.

“We are not in the habit of getting involved in politics,” our Necromancer’s Guild insider told us, who has requested to remain anonymous, “We are not a vassal of the Vailkrinese Crown, nor do we take orders from King Kasyr Azakhaer. Our members hail from all over Lithrydel and are free to follow their own moral code.” Many citizens are left to wonder what this has to do with them, however. Nearly 10,000 undead still remain displaced throughout Vailkrin and tensions are only getting higher as the lack of material support compounds the issues on the ground. “There are many necromancers living in Vailkrin who are loyal to Vailkrin and wish to see the kingdom prosper,” says our anonymous correspondent, alluding to the cynical comments of the Vailkrinese populace regarding the lack of action from the guild, “We just need time to form a coalition. Once that happens the scattered undead of Vailkrin will get the support they need.”

These vague claims of support too often fall upon deaf ears, however, especially in light of a leaked document from a Necromancer’s Guild newsletter that seems to prove the Necromancer Guild’s intentions to stay far away from this disaster. “[...] construction on the guild's second headquarters in Frostmaw is now finished,” The letter reads, “With the war going on between Larket and Cenril, as well as the many issues going on in Vailkrin, this [...] allow[s] those that wish to get away from it all to do so.” With so much effort being focused outside of Vailkrin and the Necromancer’s Guild building a safe haven far away from the conflict, the future of Vailkrin remains uncertain, with many wondering when the help will actually arrive.

Obituaries

While there's the usual odd cases that accompany life in the dark city, a section has been specifically set aside for those whose lives were lost in the recent construction event, and a brief mention of those they've left behind- whether the worker was undead, vampire, gargoyle, or simply mortal.

Was The Cost Of Larketian Stone too steep?

The article itself is a rather dry description of the peace summit, going into detail on those area leaders who had not deigned to arrive (at least publically), as well as the disasterous proclamation on the part of King Macon. While it does highlight how instrumental a constant influx of cheap and plentiful stone has been towards restoring elements of the city, as well as the establishment of trade- it raises major concerns as to what an allegiance with the hard city might represent for the dead city. A concern that is only further highlighted by the speculation that the undead quarters rather abrupt, and occasionally violent refusal to allow further construction and expansion of the undead quarters, under the premise that it's an effort to dispossess it's inhabitants of their hard fought land. A hostility that has only intensified since Macon's speech. Worse, however, is the possibility that should a war with Larket occur, it would feasibly put Vailkrin within the crossfire- during a particularily tumultous time. While the actual threat of such an occurence is somewhat downplayed by the article due to the cities 'resilience', it does focus on the possibility of the city being forced into an isolationist state if things continue to progress as they are.

[Un]Lifestyle and Entertainment

While this section of the paper does focus on the gradual restoration of places to entertain oneself, and a return to some semblance of normalacy, it likewise critiques the government for it's recent shift away from austerity measures- such as the availability of draughts from the bloodbank for a recent event, even when it's stores are nowhere near what they once were. It ends with an open-ended question, 'Whether or not the city had measures to remedy this'.

Curious Constellations

This section focuses on continued efforts to trace out consistent constellations in the sky, and whether there are any reoccuring patterns over time.  As opposed to the general tone of the paper so far, this one comes off as closer to a hobbyists entry.

Howling & Wailing

The paper ends with a political cartoon depicting both King Kasyr and King Macon hand in hand, traipsing over the smoldering corpses of witches fills the full page, with the lanky fox-eared silhouette of Lady Azakhaer fuming in the distance.

An Issue Of Cutting To The Heart

A periodical For Patriots, By Patriots
A Toothless Usurper

Yesterday, the 'World Peace Summit' occurred- a gathering of the various heads of state in many long years. Hosting such an event would normally be considered prestigious, and perhaps even heartening to it's citizens- but yesterday, it proved a concrete reminder of our dire situation.

The effete tyrant, safe in his castle, spoke of wanting peace for the city- even as we face extermination every day from the outside world. When we asked questions about the Kelayan concentration camps, or what was to be done about them- we were greeted with silence. An absence that sat almost as poignantly as those leaders absence.

Because they knew- just as we patriots did, that the world does not recognize Vailkrin, the struggles of it's common people, or the barbaric usurper at it's head. Whatever lip service he might provide about wanting to bring order to the city, what meager supplies we receive in the face of our great need- we were given proof that he'd just as soon sell the city under for profit, and return us back to the old days of oppression.

You need only look to Macon's declaration- it's newfound allegiance which threatened to bring military might down on those who do not capitulate, to deliver them to Vakmatharas' obliviate embrace. Kicking and screaming. An allegiance for stone, and worse things besides. While many of you may have heard through whispers, I was there when you publicly declared the intention of trading our everlasting citizens to Trist'oths mines, to make use of both our everlasting bodies, and the persevering will that has elevated us above the living- to grind us down in what amounts to a death sentence. All of us are disposable resources, our minds and dreams simply fodder for Vailkrins political machine, all so they can bury their hands in the drows pockets.

No, we stand corrected now. The drow aren't invaders. They're exploitative parasites, and their proximity promises only a future replete with suffering, so long as we abide their breath.

At this point, it most be acknowledged that our home is attacked. And there is nowhere else for us to go. I know some of you had clung to the faintest of hope, that the usurper might have made good on the promises of helping us be welcomed into the cities we once lived when we were alive. To find some way to reconcile our unlife with what came before.

But if the discussion with Rynvales Mutt of a ruler was any indication- we are a burden whose very existence is too trivial to acknowledge, save as something to be bartered over for gold. Whatever peace or acceptance we could have hoped is so worthless to them, that words could barely be spared.

Our sprawling history, the marks we made in the places we came from do not matter to them. They see only a corpse, and relegate us to this unhallowed grounds, with nowhere else to go. We are consigned to this desolate slice of darkness, while they split the rest of the world amongst themselves. Because we are nothing to them.

Some of you may murmur that Xalious at least promised peace and tolerance, even when the other leaders departed in silence, or disapproval. But pretty words cannot cover up their deeds. Listen to your fellows, to the sordid tales of co-ordinated extermination -led- by their treacherous archmage, that former hole-dwelling fraud.

No, the only ones we can count upon in this trying hour is ourselves. Even as the city moves to push us from our ancestral home. From the city that -we- built, and that they took from us, along with the necromancers they brought to control us- we must unite ourselves, and prevail, so that we may not only weather this dilemma, but stake out what we are owed, the past that has been denied us, and the future that we so richly deserve. Denied to us by the tyrant that sits on his stolen throne, and our smiling neighbours, who stand at the ready to exterminate us.

On Caluss
Malicious Myth Or Maligned Messiah

Caluss. If the vampires, or even the mortal denizens of the continent were to be believed- both the dead city and Trist'oth were visited by him, a god. That somehow, after many long years of silence, the heavens saw fit to deliver an undead deity onto the face of the continent- who delivered devastation wherever he walked, and finally ended his long pilgrimage within Vailkrin.

But how is it, then, that none of us can remember the advent of such an entity. That when we finally were to be graced by a deity that -celebrated- our unlife, the undying wills which mark as us superior- that we cannot remember those events. Nor the supposed tragedy that we are labeled as the executors of. Accusations which we are told, that we are 'reminded' of so often- that I'm sure some of you have likely begun to falsely remember as occurring.

Caluss, this 'God of Undeath' is an invention. A children's tale. A disgusting piece of Propaganda. Is it not curious that Xalious and Cenril were both collaborating with the monstrous usurper who seeks to ruin us? A tyrant, a mountain village who seeks our end, and a city whose past involves multiple crusades, and even a recent genocide (despite their recent attempts at repainting themselves as 'allies' to our cause.)

Does it not make more sense that there was no god, but an attempt on the part of these factions to control us- to suppress who we are, that failed colossally. Whatever the truth of the day, we can only be sure of one thing. It would not be the first time that the vampires have invited tragedy upon themselves, and others. Of trying to profit of the suffering of another, and then displacing the blame when it's convenient for them. Machinations which will now likely see themselves repeated with the recent alliance with Larket's Macon? But perhaps we can ensure it is the last. Our duty as patriots.

I, for one, and I know many amongst you- wish that Caluss was more than a simple piece of political propaganda. Now, especially- we have need of a symbol to rally around, to mark our journey forward. And if we cannot have a deity who represents our timelessness, our resilience to endure what this continent has dumped on our lap- then we need simply make one. To take the symbols that the government seems to dread, or to ask us to ignore, and to don it for ourselves like a badge. A banner to fly beneath. And perhaps, if there is even a kernel of truth to the matter- if there was indeed some entity that would have delivered us a beautiful, everlasting world- it might smile fondly upon us.

*At the bottom of the page is a different illegible signature, alongside what looks to be a drawing of a tree- not overly complex, and yet, it's jagged branches bring to mind the forsaken one within the cemetery.*

The Anonymous (Our humble few)

No doubt, many of you have been told, time and time again- that the feral members of our population are dangerous. That they cannot help themselves. That some among them carry Caluss' taint within them. That for the sake of the city, and even for the continent at large, they need to be led to a final death, or simply treated as disposable labour. But, is it not true, that if they were, somehow, elevated by a God Of Undeath, that they would be closer to the divine than any other? Something to look on in awe, rather then exterminate. To guard safe, as a reminder that of any race, we are the ones most favoured by the heavens.

And what of the Vampires own ferals, their strays? Do we here grand sweeping statements as to how they should be dealt with? Are we told that they represent a threat to the continent and need to be dealt with? Are they made to better serve the city through their destruction? It is simply a means of elevating themselves as superior, and ourselves as expendable. A (not-so) subtle attempt at returning things to the old ways, and one that markedly ignores a key element.

We are told that a vampires thirst, it's hunger, is a key element to their being, that to deny it is death. That their natural as parasites, as starving leeches, justifies the ends they take in preserving themselves. Of taking from their surroundings to eke by another day, even as their very actions might threaten to bring retribution down upon the city. Upon the undead tethered to their unfortunate, and unearned presence.

But what of the undead. We too are often possessed of ingrained impulses. If some amongst us are created, and through that creation our wills are wholly lent to a hunger, to a need to extinguish, and that is what drives us forward, day by day. Are we not entitled to the same rights as vampires to enact our will? Any attempts at cleaving these issues apart is simply sophistry- and if we truly are a gods wayward children, then only one commandment rests clear for us at this juncture.

"Do as Thou Wilt."

Our actions are as just as those of our repressive overlords, if not more-so. And it is our noble fellows, their minds and wills honed towards one singular purpose that so clearly show us the way we need to take in order to move forward.

Dark Blotter

While there is a headline detailing the recent Ascension of house Azakhaer as the ruling body in Vailkrin after the recent demise of the God Of Undeath, the section is notably small- noting that while the position has been stepped into, an official ceremony has yet to be placed “In lieu of more pressing events.” There’s a small mention that the Castle, and by extension Kasyr, is now accepting Petitions from those who would like to ask something of the state.

This article Is followed by a much more expansive one, as it details that the papers earlier investigation into House Blackwell has, at least in part, to have proven reliable- even If the source of the corruption had been their master of coin, Saorsa. The writer notes that their appeals to see the prisoner have been denied. That said, the writer is far more tentative about the recent news of the spears betrayal to the city, and seemingly laments the loss of one of the cities Longest running Celebrities to a byronic act of Hubris. (The article carries on like this for some time, and has a few flattering sketches of Shishi).

The next page is dedicated to some of the older institutions in Vailkrin, and their responses to the disaster.

Necromancer's Guild Statement:

"The atrocities left behind by Caluss after the creature's takeover of many undead citizens of Vailkrin were horrific, unnecessary, and will leave yet another stain on not only the city, but the Necromancer's Guild as well. The guild will do its best to aide and give solace to those affected by it, in whatever way is needed.

The loss of those in the guild is regrettable. But, we do wish to remind those within the guild, as well as without, that those that chose to take part in the guild's studies knew the risks of participating in any of the necromantic arts. They knew that, at any moment, Vakmatharas' hand could be there to guide them into his embrace. These few that perished ultimately gave their lives for the many of the city and it is our hope that they have passed on into the void, so as not to live these tragic events over and over, as such is often the case for many incorporeal undead.

Should anyone happen to see any of these spirits, please let the guild know so that we might monitor them and make sure they do not bring further harm to the city, should they turn to malcontent.

Sincerely,

Khitt(i) Herzegler, the Thanatos Domini

A very brief quote has been obtained from House Mahara, though it does not come from either of their Lord’s. It is instead one of the vassals, a woman by the name of Kharis. She states, “The walls of the manor have sustained damage but House Mahara is alive and well. More importantly, we were able to ensure that the Black Library and all of the knowledge retained within it was kept safe. Praise Vakmatharas.”

A statement from Leralynn Thorne:

"While my father, The Spear of Vailkrin, is currently considered a resident of Vailkrin, my family finds the decision to banish him from the kingdom and city that is undeniably his home extremely regrettable. The timing of this decree, during Shishi’s absence from this realm, is particularly transparent in its use of him as a scapegoat for the actions of others during this crisis.

I have advised my father to abide by this banishment sentence at his pleasure for the time being so that this kingdom does not become a battlefield so soon after this latest calamity. However I want to make it perfectly clear that his unofficial duties as Vailkrin’s Weapon have not been abdicated and that enemies of The City of Eternal Night, both foreign and domestic, still have him to fear. While protesting this decision to banish my father under false pretenses, for the good of our home I will still continue to cleanse the corrupted undead that remain in the kingdom through the will of Vakmatharas.

As a final note, I would like to advise any answering the throne’s call for new guard enlistments to consider that enforcing The Blue Demon’s banishment from his hometown will be part of their duties, and that they should be mindful of what that might entail before signing up."

[Un]Lifestyle and Entertainment

While the entertainment section is notably dry, save for a list of which business are currently shut down, and which have incorporated limits on the amount of undead patrons that can be in or near at once- there is a surprising amount of job postings here, a number of which bear the royal seal.

One such position is now hiring for individuals willing to help take a census of the new members of the undead population, in order to tally the total number, ascertain which regions they’re from, and to ultimately discern which are sentient, and which aren’t. There’s a small note appended to this listing, stating a preference for undead applicants.

Another listing is a royal appeal for construction companies willing and able to set aside current projects for a project involving emergency repairs to existing domiciles, as well as the establishment of new housing, especially pertaining to the undead quarters. The ability to work long hours, and having associates is a noted asset.

-

"Denizens of Vailkrin, If there is one thing that I believe can be said about us all, it is that our resilience is unmatched. Every time a calamity has befallen Vailkrin, we have managed to crawl back better than before. Stronger than before. It's a tiresome cycle, but I would like to assure you that the light at the end of the tunnel is close. My team and myself are coordinating a clean-up effort with a prolific contractor, one Larry Mar."

Below is a schedule for the first sweep of the city for the month.

"Rebuilding projects will immediately follow. This will of course take time, and I understand that time is more money lost for businesses who have already lost everything. I cannot remedy this immediately, but I will be shuttering my own businesses to devote all of my time to expediting the process of getting all of Vailkrin back on its feet. Payouts to support losses will continue as they have since embargoes were put in place. We may be a city of night, but Vailkrin is approaching a new, grander dawn."

House Azakhaer's seal is affixed to end of the message, along with Lady Azakhaer's signature.

-

Lastly, a number of postings related to new guard postings both at the borders, in the city, and at the castle have been made. It states that while experience is not necessary, it is an asset- and training will be mandatory if the position is taken up. This posting in particular seems to be specifically written with the newly houseless vampires in mind- and also mentions that other positions may be available, including in the hopeful establishment of new trade routes, and keeping them safe, once negotiations are finished.

Curious Constellations

A notably new section- this one details the changes to vailkrins celestial body, and the seemingly constant amount of shooting stars which seem to land off in the distance, despite that space seemingly beyond the edge of it's domain. There's also some small comments on the lingering scent of the sea in the air 'minus the smell of Rynvalian Dock Workers'.

Howling & Wailing

"God is Dead, We killed him - who cares?”

So, the next big world ending apocalypse has kicked the bucket. That’s good. It’s great even, if these things weren’t an annual occurrence. Frankly, though- I’m more worried about the problems it left behind. Our homes are in flames, our economy has somehow managed to hit a brand new low - and we have a population crisis like we’ve never seen before.

I can’t even get from my manse to my work anymore, without literally stepping over undead- and being unsure if they’re the neighbourly sort, the ‘bite your ankles off’ variety, or a necrotic calamity waiting to happen. I’m looking at you, blighted Cul-De-sac.

Do we really think a change in leadership is going to do a damn thing? Don’t get me wrong, I -appreciate- the fine folks at house Azakhaer. They have this great habit of throwing themselves face first into whatever and whomever threatens the city. But, is that -really- what we need right now?

They can rally people all they like, but until I actually see some change- and maybe an end to the embargo’s choking the city- I don’t think I care whose wearing the crown. ~Sylian Ventra

"If this whole attitude thing is 'cause of Caluss, y'all should know I straight-up undid one o' his acts right in front o' his face. Unwound th' curse from his favorite thrall. Anybody wants ta lump me in with his shamblin' sacks-a skin, they can bite my leathery--" - A quote from the owner of Ernest’s Curses

"Who said you could come onto our property?! The Dark Forest is separate from that cretin pretending to be a savior and a king, and it's only a matter of time before he decides you're too troublesome to have as a subject and do the same thing to you that he did to my wife, now get the [the wording here appears to be smudged on all copies of this paper] out!" - Karasu D'Chath

"The alleged misdeeds of the deviant undead minority do not reflect the ideology of the majority. This rampant discrimination against the non-vampire unliving is unjust and will no longer be tolerated. If needed, we will most assuredly ameliorate the situation ourselves, without ambiguity, and very permanently." - Lefty

Obituaries

While the obituary section is often a point of entertainment in the dark city- this editions is expansive, documenting the known fatalities amongst the local undead and vampire population. There are a number of sidebars providing memoriams for notable figures and the fallen houses.

What’s more, there’s a section for individuals who may have lost a loved one to the disaster- and where they can go, if they want to attempt to locate and identify their body.

The bleakest note, however- is a small Ad put out by the temple of Vakmatharas, offering their services in order to help those dissatisfied with their unlife, who might wish to pass on.

EASTERN FRONT CRISIS: CASTLE BLACKWELL FALLS TO UNDEAD GOD

Reports from the Eastern Front bring grim news of the fall of Castle Blackwell, the Emerald of the East and the first line of defense in the marches. Countess Quintessa Blackwell has confirmed that the fortress has been cursed with a powerful spell, rendering it uninhabitable and impossible to defend.

In a desperate attempt to halt the advance of this curse, the countess ordered the castle to be quarantined and deconstructed. Plans to use the fortress as a refuge for displaced civilians have been abandoned, and House Blackwell must now warn all potential refugees to stay away from the area.

This devastating development leaves the eastern front unprotected, and reports are already coming in of Drow invasions from Trist'oth. The situation is described as dire, with Vailkrin left without its Shield to protect it from the enemy.

In addition to the loss of the fortress, the suspected conspirator Saorsa Cladatch has taken advantage of the chaos and escaped with members of the Blackwell household guard. Although Saorsa herself is not considered dangerous, her accomplices are seasoned veterans and must be approached with caution.

This is a developing situation, and we will bring you more updates as they become available.

The Countess Quintessa Blackwell herself has left this statement:

“My fellow countrymen,

I stand before you today in the wake of a grave crisis, one that has shaken our lands and threatened the very foundations of our society. The fall of Castle Blackwell has left us vulnerable and exposed, and we must stand united in the face of this threat.

But in the midst of this turmoil, we are faced with yet another challenge, one that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of our society. I speak of the claims of a man named Kasyr Azakhaer, who has come forward to assert his right to the throne of Vailkrin.

Let me be clear: Kasyr is an oath breaker and an abdicator. He gave up his claims to the throne when he abandoned it, and his recent actions against the Spear of Vailkrin show that he has no interest in the welfare of our people or the stability of our kingdom. He is a pretender, a charlatan, and a danger to us all.

House Blackwell rejects this false claimant and refuses to bend the knee to him. We have served the realm through thick and thin, and we will not waver in our loyalty now. We will fight to protect our lands and our people, and we will not allow the ambitions of a power-hungry pretender to derail our efforts.

Vailkrin needs unity, but not the flimsy unity offered by House Azakhaer. They have been proven unworthy of the role in the past and I remain unconvinced anything has changed. Allow Kasyr to steal the crown and you will soon find yourself abandoned when the King Who Abdicated does what he always does; Negligence.

Thank you, and may the gods have mercy on all of us.”

"Betrayal, Bread & Circus: From Arenas To Anarchy- How The Dredges Of Dragana Laid Waste To Lithrydel "

An Expose by Roden Dight

This special (and especially lengthy) edition of the Carrion Crow is kicked off with a striking sketch of Quintessa. That said, however flattering the portrait may be, what ensues is anything but- As it labels the leader of house Blackwell a reckless murderer, A cultist to a false god- and worst of all, A threat to both Vailkrins’ inhabitants, and the very existence of the city itself. The Author notes that he had difficulty processing the sheer depth of the information he'd been handed by both Valrae Baines & the Head of House Azakhaer- yet not even a day after it had been delivered, Quintessa had moved to murder the Mayor of Cenril. An act which strains itself to be considered a coincidence, and is outright unfathomable in the face of the attack on Kasyr within the same timeframe- A concerted attempt at wiping away the whistle blowers who had provided not hearsay- but fact.

Included with the paper are a number of unredacted records gathered from various sources. The foremost of these highlighted is certain incidence reports from the Warriors Guiild, as well as a reported Demotion tied to one of it's members, Quintessa, not only attacking one of the holy trees, but also wounding one of their guilds allies in the process. What's notable about these elements is that it verifies that Quintessa was in fact responsible for blighting two of Lithrydels’ three holy trees. And she did not act alone in these events - though it was only during their final attack on the Xalious tree that one of her conspirators was revealed as supposed Spear of Vailkrins Daughter, Leralynn. (Supporting documentation from the Mages Guild is detailed here)

What's more, The warriors guild report clarifies the existence of a third Vial, which was only destroyed due to a Skirmish with the swordsman Krice.

A fact whose importance is highlighted with the documentation leaked from the Mages guild. These documents track the large scale (and detrimental) effect that this act had on druidic magic, but more importantly, on the arcane magic which proves important to the economy, the necromancers guild, and the myriad ingenious amenities central to Vailkrin’s society.

The paper then highlights the potential danger this posed when the Xalious Tree was felled  'due' to this corruption- and highlights the brief cessation of arcane magic across the continent. There's a special editorial emphasis here put on the damage of countless Arcane artifacts, and the fiscal repercussions. The worst part of this section of the exposé, however, is the simple supposition that it makes. Namely, that the existence of a third Vial heavily implies that Quintessa had intended to blight the Trembling Tree-Whose existence as a divine foci would have played havoc on not only Vakmatharas’ worship, but also spelled peril for the city itself- As Vailkrin’s existence is sustained by Divine magic. A point that is not only reflected in documentation obtained from the necromancers guild, (Another Institution that the Blackwells saw fit to smear), but which is -also- supported by documentation found in the Black Library.(Documentation which is quoted, and referenced in a small appendix at the bottom of the article)

This is followed by a segment strictly dedicated to condemning the 'supposed shield of Vailkrin', for all the harm they've risked to the city itself, for the willingness to endanger all it's citizens, as well as being wholly responsible for creating the potential to reignite the old war with Cenril.

There's also a segment dedicated to Shishi's overall inaction insofar as mitigating any of these actions, despite his supposed role as 'The Speak Of Vailkrin- with his whole notable action being his blatant attempt at trying to halt the publishing of this article. These condemnations, however, isn't strictly limited to Vailkrinians’. The mages guild, for instance, receives numerous rebukes for their failure to release this information in a timely manner, especially in regards to how it impacted the continental economy, and Vailkrin’s affairs. There's also some speculation as to how involved the Former Archmage, Odhranos Kerrigan may have been in this suppression of information- given certain trial records detail their awareness of Quintessa's role in trying to topple the Xalious government.

Another guild which receives this journalists ire is the Warriors guild, notably it's former leader Lionel O'Connor, are mentioned for their suppression of records as to Quintessa Blackwell's activities- including their allegiance to a false god that stands as an enemy to Vailkrin’s Patron, Vakmatharas.

  • A small picture, Depicting a spindly humanoid with the head of a fly is here. To say it's a faithful representation would be an utter lie, given the scepter it sports in a hand looks akin to a rattle, and it's dragging a blanket in it's offhand. And yet, there's something disarming about the backdrop of ruined houses sketched behind it.*

A supposed Deity of 'Undeath' who stands as an enemy to the freewill of our Undead Citizens- who would inflict worse upon this fair city then even those who had caused the civil war.

The article, Lengthy as it is, ends on a simple note- that action should be taken about House Blackwell and it's Matron- perhaps in the same vein as house had committed similar crimes, and which had seen the house dismantled, it's members punished, and it's resources dedicated to the restoration of the city.

Howling and Wailing

This months opinion section is mostly preoccupied with the recent upsurge in Anti-undead & Anti-necromancer sentiment, as well as the associated rise in the cost of goods. Some comments seem concerned with the loss of existing contracts, whereas others decry the additional difficulty in traveling beyond the bounds of the city. That said, the Vitriol seems fairly targeted at Cenril for the moment- with many comment highlighting the Cold War that once existed with the city, and more specifically, it's clergy.

[Un]Lifestyle and Entertainment

Come one, Come all to final climatic match of Vailkrin's first Blood Bowl. It's been a pulse pounding series of weeks- and I'm sure there's countless among you who are eager to find out the victor between our very own Khitt Herzegler, representing the Necromancers Guild, and the Lethally efficient, Lita. That said, I'm going to be attending to see the sideshow- After all, who could miss a chance to try and catch a glimpse of the woman whose staged this show to distract the city from her recent (and not-so-recent) actions.

It's going to a time, folks. One that might even rival Perdere.

An Exsanguinating Economy

Tensions are on the rise with businesses in Vailkrin with fears of further losses on the horizon. With the recent embargoes and sanctions in place across Lithrydel for Vailkrinian trade, several businesses within the City of the Dead are suffering more than they were during the period with the Xalious Tree's damage diminishing magical use across the continent.

“Nobody wanted to import spider silks from us,” says Gunther, former co-owner of Gunther and Raoul's Haute Couture, now closed. “We've had to sell our business.”

Sisters by blood, house, and neighboring shops, Ikara and Maya of House Ventra, have also suffered terrible losses, so much so that they may very well be one of several on the verge of shuttering businesses.

Well known weapons smith Thalah of House Trintus  struggles to keep his doors open. “The only Reliable Shield Of Vailkrin you can find in this city, is in my store."

Demarian, a shop owner of  necromancy and magical supplies and member of House Mahara, notes that his sales have significantly dropped for business since the destruction of the Xalious Tree, and even since its healing he is suffering losses. “Nobody wants to buy anything from us. If they hear or see the words 'undead' or 'vampire', my exports are sent back.”

A significant loss to Vailkrin's economy is the joint-owned Blood Bank, headed by House Markan and Ventra. With Vailkrin's tainted image brought on by its supposed Shield, blood donors have decreased to merely a trickle. The Xalious Tree's damage caused a drought of sorts until its healing, as the magical means of preserving blood frequently failed during that period of time, including several highly valued vintages and years of blood.

Varen, well known coffin maker with a shop next to The Hanging Corpse Tavern, wrote in that their coffin-making business is experiencing losses as well, even with the seemingly unending calamity and chaos taking place across the continent. “So many would rather gather their dead in piles than buy coffins from us.”

In light of these atrocious circumstances, Lady Stitch of House Azakhaer is spearheading a fund to help support Vailkrinian businesses to prevent more losses and to keep the City of the Dead from further economic damage. She hopes to soothe over tensions with regions across Lithrydel to re-establish and potentially expand trade.

“I cannot promise an immediate cure-all for this, but as a business owner in this city I've taken it upon myself to help any fellow business owner that reaches out. We're all in this together.”

Quotes

When Pressed on the matter of Quintessa, the Warrior Krice had this to say "One of us tried to hold her accountable. The others were too ignorant to let him."

That said, Khitti Herzegler had far more to offer in regards to the situation both abroad and at home

“With regards to Vailkrin and its neighbors, I think this means that the neighboring regions are going to be far more suspicious and wary of Vailkrin for a little while. In terms of necromancy alone, there’s already a huge stigma against dark magic and this will only make things worse. Which is unfortunate after I’ve tried so hard to show, both in the Devout’s Guild and the Necromancer’s Guild, that anyone can use dark magic. That they can be used for good or neutrality. I literally use it at home to heat up my tea kettle! But now with these attacks, it basically erases everything or almost everything I’ve worked towards. It’s… rather depressing and I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me now because of it. And with the connection to the God of Undeath? Literally working for it? The undead in Vailkrin, and everywhere else, are going to suffer. They -already- suffer--and I speak from experience as a former vampire.”

“And I don’t think she misused her position in the Necromancer’s Guild. Her experimentations, to make these creatures she’s used on other people, were never held within the Spire. It was always in Castle Blackwell or the Realm of Chaos. While she did use necromancy, it was things that she’d learned a few years ago, when she was a student. There was no abuse of her current position within the guild, but after the attack on Mayor Valrae, between that and trying to destroy the holy trees? I needed to take a stand to protect my guild and the people I care about, on the off chance that she did try to make use of things, with the help of her position.

“And finally, regarding Quintessa herself? I do think she can be rehabilitated. There’s remorse there. She’s terrified. I don’t think there’s a need for execution, for her or anyone that assisted her. Alithyk Caluss is deceitful. A liar. A manipulator. It turned an almost entire ship of people into undead, against their will! And someone else was left to take the blame. The insect preys on weak-willed beings--a literal child in Quintessa’s case--and makes promises of power. And what’s the point really, when it has intentions of tainting the entire world with undeath and literally destroying us all? That’s not an equal cost. There’s nothing fair about that agreement. I’ve met creatures just like Caluss and do you know what’s happened to them all? I helped destroy them myself. A crazed high priest of Vakmatharas named Facilier, from the Shadow Plane; Kahran and his lieutenants’ and their creations; Xicotl, the earth primordial; literal massive insects that had slumbered beneath the ground for aeons and were hellbent on devouring us all. I have fought them and I have helped destroy them.”

“So, do you know why I don’t think Quintessa should be executed? That she should be helped and rehabilitated rather than sentenced to death? Because I used to be exactly like her. She is the mirror of myself, even from just 5 or 6 years ago. So if there’s not an ounce of hope for her, then what does that say about me?”

Dark Blotter

The fallout from the “Savage Soirée” (as the gala has been coined in popular parlance) continues with no end in sight. House Ginavi has been dealt yet another, and fatal blow, and allegedly from within its own ranks. Lady Alesha of House Ginavi was killed at the Gala held on May 30th by a creature known as ‘X.’ The reports from within the estate claim that Celiann of House Ginavi returned to the estate sometime after the gala. Through some manipulation of necromantic power, the vampiress killed the two remaining members of House Ginavi, effectively destroying the house. Eyewitness testimony offers contradicting accounts of what occurred inside the grim estate. One witness holds that Celiann collapsed the staircase through magical means, ripped a piece of wood off the debris, then used it to skewer the heart of her former kin, rip the heart out, then eat the non-beating heart while whispering a chant. The ritual allegedly conferred to her new necromantic powers which allowed her to give Decembrius, the most powerful mage of the house and the last remaining Ginavi, a true death with just the blink of her eye. Rumor has it that Celiann was last seen near the Azakhaer estate. (ooc: The “Savage Soirée is uploaded on the wiki under ‘Crimson Rondo.’ Contact Celiann, Xersom or Kasyr to get involved.)

Frehley Criss, the last unliving member of Hiss, a popular ghoul band which grew famous in the 70th and 80th decade of the Metal Age (according to the Stanley-Simmons calendar) has lamentably succumb to true death in a freak accident in his home. Hiss was known for their iconic black-and-white face paint, flamboyant stage theatrics, and blood spitting during performances. Criss is survived by his 20 cats.

Howling and Wailing

The opinion section is split between two topics. The first is the contemporary pastime of hating Cenril and waxing poetic about how the sea will run red with the blood of Cenrilians. The second is a much older tradition in Vailkrin, powered by the charisma of Hiss. Column after column offers touching remembrance pieces authored by die-hard (literally), aging (always) fans.

Dark Blotter

“Scarlet Soiree Runs Red with Dead.” This is the article Crow readers have been waiting for to elucidate them to just what exactly transpired at the gala, and the headline does not downplay the drama. Quite the opposite, the entire article is written in the most inflammatory language possible, summoning Vailkrin’s rage and redirecting it at Cenril. Readers who mistake this article for a column in the opinion section are forgiven. Journalistic integrity be damned, the editors and authors cannot stand to mince words when reporting on a situation which threatens their city and their kind. In fact, when reporting on the death of Lady Alesha of House Ginavi, the article offers a passing comment which correctly names ‘X,’ a mysterious cloaked figure and resident of Vailkrin, as her murderer. Not much ink is spilled on detailing the in-fighting at the gala. The author downplays infighting by quoting Lord Kasyr of House Azakhaer, who released a statement to the Crow which said, “The Lady Alesha had made it quite clear she did not want me involved in the business of her house, even if it had been her house which had chosen to involve me in the first place. And, as I saw it, her confrontation with 'X' was clearly House business. Certainly, she saw fit to disparage his honour and intelligence, and do her utmost to antagonize him. I merely adhered to her wishes, and allowed said conflict to get underway. Likewise, I did my utmost to ensure the safety of those guests who had not chosen to spit on my hospitality. C'est la vie.” The article then focuses on the attack launched by outsiders: the Nathali cultists accompanied by an assassin who bore the emblem of the Church of Cenril. The article repeats twice that Cenrili Guard General Alice Brommson, who was in attendance and proved herself to be an ally of Vailkrin, identified the non-Nathali assailant as being affiliated with the Church of Cenril. Lady Lorraine of House Torrador was assassinated by the allegedly Cenrili killer. At last the article explains that for the past two years a spate of similarly executed murders has left Vailkrin authorities baffled, but in recent months investigators have concluded that the Nathali Cult is in fact connected with the Church of Cenril, which is consistent with the vitriol the Church has been spinning and spewing against Vailkrin for years. The Nathali Cult is believed to have been responsible for those serial murders, ergo the Church of Cenril is responsible for the bloodshed at the Gala. (ooc: The gala is on the wiki under the title ‘Crimson Rondo.’ Contact Kasyr or Alice to get involved!)

Lord Kasyr of House Azakhaer, King of the Vampires, was attacked in the city plaza by an assassin. Crow reporters in Cenril report that the assassin’s feline-shape, height, and attire match descriptions of an assassin that murdered an avian woman at a funeral home in Cenril. The assassin’s use of dragon blood severely injured the King of Vampires, who was ultimately able to stop the attacker by collapsing a portion of the street. No body was found. Lord Kasyr recuperated from his wounds in time for the gala. (ooc: Kasyr’s brush with death is uploaded on the wiki under the title “Regicide Costs a Pretty Penny.” The assassination at the funeral home is also on the wiki under the title “Unburying the Truth.” Contact Jelko or Kasyr to get involved.)

A vampire named Phaedra was also poisoned with dragon’s blood during yet another assassination attempt at The Hanging Corpse Tavern. After Phaedra was poisoned, the assassin engaged her in physical combat. The vampire would have died a true death if not for the heroic intervention of Pyoshia, a wraithen dryad. The dryad summoned insects as part of her offensive, much to the delight of Hanging Corpse patrons and frustration of the assassin. As he fled, the assassin was overheard saying that a person named Kovl did not pay him (the assassin) enough to keep his (supposedly Kovl’s) name out of it. The assassin is described as being of elven descent and fond of wearing a duster jacket. (ooc: Contact Phaedra, Kovl, or Pyoshia to get involved. Or if you know the assassin, bug him too.)

Howling and Wailing

All the howling and wailing and teeth gnashing is directed at Cenril. The more sober examples of calls to action include gems like: “Let us pile their bodies on a pyre so tall that all of Hollow will see an entire city burn for days, and they will know to never antagonize the might of Vailkrin!” Less hinged opinions boast creativity. One ‘article,’ written in the esoteric language of the undead, is nothing more than a recipe for a 5-course meal using human, elven, and feline body parts. The recipe is peppered with phrases like “Add brains to taste” and “This meal, like revenge, is a dish best served over a corpse.”

Dark Blotter

A vampire sought refuge in the City the day before Crow publication. The vampire suffered unthinkable torture, starvation, and entombment, allegedly at the graveyard. Her body bore injuries that could only have been sustained through holy, divine magic, which has led investigators to suspect this could be the work of paladins or clerics. Although she managed to escape her captor, her injuries were too severe and she succumbed to true death. The case is being investigated.

Spies sent to the Underdark to gather information about The Burrower report a change in behavior. The beast no longer feeds on the living creatures of the Underdark. In an unexpected twist it has even hunted the undead spies themselves, a behavior it did not exhibit before. Authorities caution that Vailkrin may be the next city to suffer The Burrower’s wrath and recommend that citizens exercise extreme caution when traveling outside the City. (ooc: For more info see Tenebrae and Tiphareth. The Burrower is also mentioned in the arc Venturil’s Bane. The last RP entitled “Bait” addresses this change in behavior.)

Vailkrin authorities ask citizens to share any information they may have about the Nathali, a foreign cult group recognized by their distinctive tattoos (illustrated for the purposes on this article) and gray scarves. (ooc: Contact Redhale and Kasyr for more info.)

Howling and Wailing

Why are we bothering with an investigation? A waste of time and resources! Everyone knows this is the work of those god-obsessed lunatics in Cenril! For months they have been spewing anti-undead, anti-Vailkrin rhetoric in that cesspool they call a city. This opinion piece was penned by a member of House Trintus. Accompanying the column is a collage of newspapers clippings. Each clipping is a unique anti-Vailkrin article published by Cenril’s Holy Gazette in the past year. There are 14 articles.

The Crow reports on The Burrower factually and describes the creature as being undead, and of dim will and wit, not that the three descriptions always go hand-in-hand. Although Trist’oth City remains largely unharmed, drow casualty in the outlying areas of the Underdark are on the rise. There have also been reports from the drow that a few smaller Duergar settlements have been destroyed. This report has been unconfirmed by Duergar sources, because no non-Duergar newspaper has a Duergar source. They simply don’t do that. (ooc: For more info see Tenebrae and Tiphareth. "Somthing Wicked," a dark ritual supply shop has officially re-opened! The article waxes poetic about the quality of the wares on sale, and the overall aesthetic which is described as “classic Vailkrin,” highlighting the blood on the floor of the shop as being just on the right-side of fine line between tacky and tasteful.

Howling and Wailing

The general opinion section is rather preoccupied this month with The Burrower in the Underdark. There is some fretting that the undead nature of the beast will draw accusing eyes on Vailkrin. One columnist believes Vailkrin needs to get out in front of this potential problem and deal with The Burrower.

Letter to the Editor

To The Honourable Editor Of The Carrion Crow,

It was not so long ago that the people of Vailkrin were torn apart by the recent civil war, a cataclysmic and chaotic maelstrom of violence which all but deprived the denizens of this dark city of the means to enjoy their everyday existence. During that discordant state of affairs, many great estates and enterprises were lost - and it was only with the emergence of the recent peace that we've begun to build anew, the re-unification of vampire society serving to allow this great city to flourish.

And yet, it was not just through the force of our strength that we were able to re-establish order within this great city. Whilst I agree with the spirit of the esteemed columnist from house Asharam, that this city will flourish by force of a unified populace, I would humbly ask people to recall that when our very way of life was threatened, it was our undead neighbours who heeded our call and came to our aid, just as we came to theirs. It would be remiss of us not to acknowledge the strength of their efforts, and their impact of their culture, whenever we appeal to the idea of a unified Vailkrin.

A recent surge in the creation of vampire thralls has led to a few messy feeding frenzies in the neighboring areas. Some young thralls have left drained corpses near Cenril, inciting the rage of the Church and Guard there. Be on the alert against Cenrili aggression. Please keep your thralls on short leashes and be discreet in the immediate surrounding areas. There is also a drawing of Alice Brommson included with the caption “General of the Cenrili Guard.”

Spiders are agitated in the dark forest after the last Titans of Winter Tournament battle hosted by Vailkrin in the local spider’s nest. Hildegarde of Frostmaw was declared victorious over Meri of Gualon.

On Vampiracy

The editor of this opinion section, an ancient droning pedant-cum-vampire of House Mahara (because, of course), insists on the semantic (and made-up) difference between the words vampiracy and vampirism. He frequently writes a column that bloviates about this semantic distinction. In his less than humble opinion, vampirism refers to the physical state of being a vampire, while vampiracy refers to the way of life and belief system of vampires. This issue has been blessed with one such overwrought, boring column. Joy.

An article by a vampire from House Ventra questions the economic benefit to Vailkrin of vampire unification on all fronts. The author claims, without giving specific examples, that her House has had to forego savvy business deals and investments, because they did not jive with the general ethical honor code of all the vampire houses of Vailkrin (with some shade thrown at House Azakhaer). The article further argues that the potential gains from those deals would have trickled down to the rest of Vailkrin.

Not surprisingly, there is a follow-up article penned by a vampire from House Asharam espousing the economic benefit of collaboration. The article also includes the typical pro-unification byline of vampire security in numbers. It warns that to be anything but unified will leave Vailkrin vulnerable to another occupation by the likes of the Lich Queen Ryeanna or those of her ilk.

All article are heavily vampire-centric. The other undead occupants of the city are largely ignored by the Carrion Crow.
