Class Description

This ability can not be taught or instilled in those not born with it and, therefore, Spellfilchers tend to be coveted for their services. The Spellfilcher tends to keep his ability hidden, as there are those who would make their life a living nightmare; Once discovered, a Spellfilcher is often hunted for the rest of their lives. Similarly, there are those who don't understand that a Spellfilcher's ability can not be taught. Many Spellfilchers have been tortured in an attempt to force these unteachable methods out of them.

Spellfilchers are born only amongst races of notable magical prowess. As they age, the Spellfilcher will show no innate affinity to the arcane arts, almost as if they have no magical abilities at all. Once spotted, a Spellfilcher is often taken from their parents (with permission) by the race's Spellfilcher's Guild and brought up there, away from the rest of society. With the Guild, they learn to use their abilities and how to apply them. These guilds also teach the basics of weaponry, poisons, disguise, and stealth, as these skills can often be tantamount to survival.

Spellfilchers can be of any alignment depending upon their race, though most tend to be neutral since they do not grow up in normal society and therefore do not usually have an opinion on things going on in the world. Many will leave the guild once they become of age to seek their fortunes by becoming adventurers. Others will return to their society and attempt to lead a normal life, never utilizing their abilities again. Still other societies have a special place for Spellfilchers. The Duergar, for example, employ their Spellfilchers as a form of Black Ops, often having them filch a polymorph spell and use it to infiltrate the 'surface races'.

Class Abilities

A Spellfilchers most basic ability, and the one from which every other ability derives, is the ability to detect and 'understand' any magic instantaneously. With this ability, a Spellfilcher is a natural at discovering and disabling magical traps and artifacts. Likewise, the Spellfilcher knows how to supplement the functions of magical artifacts such as rings, belts, or other magical devices, making them even more potent than before. Because of this, Spellfilchers are often found aiding adventuring parties in order to disable magical traps for them. They tend to wear plethora of magical artifacts, supplementing them all to become a super soldier of sorts. This process, of course, takes an excess amount of mana and, though they produce no mana of their own, they instinctively draw from the mana of those around them, slightly weakening their magical opponents in the process.

Spellfilchers of exceptional skill have learned to mimic the spells of those around them and those of still more skill have learned to retain a few of those abilities. This process is known as filching; some Spellfilchers are skilled enough to retain up to ten spells at once, though this is very rare and takes centuries of practice. Furthermore, filched spells are never as strong as the spells they were filched from.
