Overview
Saber-Toothed Felines are large, marine felines characterized by their exaggerated "saber" canines, their dark striped coat, and their xenophobic personalities. They are rare, capable hunters and seafarers.
Physiology
Saber-Toothed Felines are, for the most part, typical anthropomorphic feline specimens. They have a humanoid body, a tail, and a catlike head all covered in fur. Their digitigrade legs end in pawlike feet, their hands bear a pawlike thickness, and all ten digits end in retractile claws. Saber-toothed felines have dark coats that alternate in black and brown stripes, and their tails are bushy. They are larger than most felines and well-muscled. Most distinctly of all, their upper canines are profoundly elongated and curve slightly inward, thus earning their "saber" namesake.
Psychology
Learning what we can from the behavior of isolated males, saber-toothed felines are violent, ferocious individuals driven by predatory compulsions. All living creatures are fair prey to the saber-tooth. Their willingness to hunt and eat other humanoids has occasionally earned them a reputation cannibals, though the term would technically not apply since they would never consider eating a fellow feline. Those saber-cats who have most successfully integrated into civil society live as whalers and spend nearly all their time at sea, away from terrestrial civilization.
History & Society
Saber-Toothed Felines originate from a small, tight clutch of volcanic islands. Because of their aggressive, xenophobic nature, these insular tribes remained entirely uncontacted (read "uncontactable") for the duration of the archipelago's habitation. Very little, then, is known of saber-toothed feline society.
We do know that the felines used boats for fishing, with aquatic megafauna being their principal staple. Males of the tribe would hunt in fleets of outrigger canoes; these expeditions must have lasted days or weeks at a time, since hunting parties were sometimes spotted a significant distance from the island. Surviving saber-tooths are still valued for their experience hunting whales, sea-serpents, and other giant marine life. Females remained near their island and were purportedly accomplished herbalists. Both sexes caught fish and birds by hand, with bows, and with nets.
Recently, a violent eruption destroyed the primary island of their small archipelago home. The remaining islands were burnt bare by pyroclastic flow. All animal and vegetable life thereupon was completely annihilated and, needless to say, no saber-toothed feline society exists today. Though a few parties of hunting males did survive, as they were far away at sea at the time of the eruption, there are no known surviving females of the race.
