Description:

A crossbow not in the traditional sense, the weapon functions on similar properties. Its construction is that of a sleek crossbow with its bow removed to leave only the stock and body. Made of steel, mithril, and a surprising amount of precious metals used decoratively, the weapon is completely a work of art. Curves that flow from the foregrip where the offhand is rested end at a short one handed grip. A stock can fold out, held tight up against the body otherwise. A loop lever is near the trigger that would release the ordnance. Slots to hold attachements to the weapon, such as a spy glass, extra spring clips for holding bolts, or even a bayonet are present on the weapon. Roughly two feet long in its compact storage form, it generally sits at the small of Ranok's back in a specially made holster.

Rather then utilizing a large bow that is bent, then released, to fire a projectile, runic batteries store tension, similar to another of Ranok's works. The loop lever being cocked repeatedly twists internal springs, which then bleed their tension off into the runes. Internally, there is a smaller string in an engrooved setting that is the firing mechanism. When the runes are activated via triggerpull, the string is yanked and the projectile hurled. In other words, a much more compact crossbow. New bolts are fed in via spring clip (that is, an enclosed box with springs pushing new bolts in) and the feed is large enough to accept projectiles up to roughly an inch and a half in diameter.

History:

The Mirabelle series is a long reached weapon, receiving a constant revision and rehaul. The current weapon is 6th in the series, a legacy long reached. Originally conceived as as a rock hurler that used concussive magics to propel objects, the rehauls saw to improve its viability in combat and reduce the incredibly unsubtle nature of the original. The name is given to any of the crossbows that made be made in replica, but Ranok holds the only one with the true name of Mirabelle, and the smith tends to treat her like an elegant lady at all times.
