The Order of the Shade was defunct for 2,000 years. Recently, necromancers (and a now-dead lich) have made strides to resurrect the ancient necromantic sect and summon a new god.

History
As the legend goes, over 2,000 years ago, when the matriarchal grip on power was enjoying its lengthy peak, the five male mages of the first five houses began experimenting in the art of necromancy. They met in secret and called themselves The Order of the Shade. For several decades The Order remained a secret from the Matrons, but eventually the mages’ growing power inspired plots to usurp the Matron’s power. They sought to replace the spider goddess with a new god, a necromantic being from another plane who would usher in the end Age of Mortals and replace them with the Age of the Undead.
Their bold ambitions exposed them to discovery. The first five Matrons publicly burned the mages alive, then hung their corpses from spider silk cocoons over their estate’s grand entrances as a warning to the drow public. As the corpses swung from the stalactites above, rumor spread like faerie fire on the ground below. It was whispered that before the Matrons intervened, the mages had created a magical set of five items. Each item is imbued with a different power, but when worn together, they bestow upon the wearer the ability to shape-shift at will into a shade, a powerful, wraith-like being.
