Description:

This whip is made from the enchanted leather from a variety of Underdark creatures, the different skins are interwoven and braided together, with barbs and spines of some unfortunate beast woven in to the lash. In the whip's handle are engraved the insignia of each of the major Drow families and the symbols representing their pledges of service and obedience to the Drow Matriarch. This whip can be used as a normal whip, or on command it can be made to wrap around it's target and hold it. Naturally, this works best on man-sized targets or smaller. Larger and stronger beings can still move about, although the whip may grasp onto a single limb. If the target is much larger or stronger than the wielder, the wielder is in some danger of being thrown or yanked around themselves. When it hits or grasps, the barbs inject a magical toxin that causes severe pain and agony in the victim, even in the undead, who can not normally feel such things. Finally, the whip may be snapped in the direction of a distant target, flinging barbs at it. These barbs are not able to inject the pain toxin, but penetrate most skin and hide easily, even those with thick hide such as trolls, and the barbs inflict pain on their own and are devilishly difficult to remove. The barbs are magically renewed on the whip, and it never runs out.

History:

Created many aeons ago by the former Matron Mother of Trist'oth, this artifact became lost for innumerable centuries after the Matron's regime was final overthrown in her dwindling twilight years. This barbed whip was, at the time, as much a symbol of the Drow and their Empire as it was a weapon. The Immortal Spirit is a formidable weapon in it's own right, and within the hands of a Drow with suitable power and prestige, a potent symbol of control. It serves as a reminder to all Drow of where their loyalty resides (something not to be sneered at in the betrayal-prone world of Drow politics), but also as a reminder of the pain and agony awaiting those who turn traitor. It is rumored that this whip is not just a symbol of the spirit of the Drow, but literally THE spirit of the Drow Empire, probably due to the large number of royal Drow Houses who were forced into lending their arcane power into its creation. The ancient whip found its way through various unscrupulous dealers and eventually onto the surface, finally returning to the hands of a Drow after millennia of absence. This Drow, a thief by the name of Orro, was enslaved by the Frost Giant Vornir and subsequently gifted to Patron Tiphareth D'Artes as a sign of good faith. Upon examining his new slave's belongings, the Eldermage recognized the numerous House Insignia upon this particular piece and took considerable interest in its origin. Only after months of research through ancient archives did he finally arrive at the assumption that this was truly the lost symbol know to the Drow as the Immortal Spirit of Trist'oth. The Eldermage, though poorly versed in melee weaponry has nevertheless been exploring the item's more interesting potencies in order to suitably wield the artifact.
