History:

This Book of the Dead is the equivalent of the bible of necromancy. It was compiled over millennia by a cult of necromantic mages hidden within the court society of the Port Rynvale High Elves. Its existence came to light when the followers of its ideals were exposed during their efforts to organize themselves to leave Port Rynvale and seek sanctuary among the newly founded society of Forsaken Elves, open followers of the necromantic religion, established in the Duchy of Vhys by the Lich Queen Ryeanna. Rumored to contain almost every possible known spell of the necromantic arts, from basic reanimation, to those needed become a Lich, the Book of the Dead has become the source of tensions between the High Born and the Forsaken. Confiscated from the exposed cult community before it was driven out of their society, the High Elves secured the Book of the Dead, fearing its potential for misuse and the consequences it might bring to bear on Hollow. The cult exiles however, having taken awareness of the Book’s existence to the Forsaken, shared enough knowledge of its content and potential that these devoted followers of its faith are determined to gain possession of its secrets and power.

One of these Forsaken dark mages, Knelltic, took it upon himself to go the less diplomatic route of having the Book stolen from the High Born, commissioning the Rynvale smuggler and thief Finn, to recover the item. The commission was fulfilled in such a manner that the High Elves are yet unaware that the Book has been taken, but not before the death of the one who commissioned it. While in the custody of Knelltic, the mage's Master, Tiphareth D'Artes, came in contact with the book for the first time. Though this time was brief, it was long enough for him to develop a lust for the book and its power. Knelltic died in combat and, shortly thereafter, the book fell into the possession of a common trader.

The ancient manuscript passed seamlessly from owner to owner within the black market, never finding capable hands until it was discovered and purchased by the ice magus Satoshi, who subsequently gifted the relic to the Drow Necromancer Daath. This mage, like Knelltic, was also an apprentice of the Eldermage Tiphareth, and while in Daath's possession marked the second fateful time that the D'Artes Patron would come into contact with the artifact. The Drow Daath soon disappeared from the land, leaving all of his possessions behind under very mysterious circumstances; the book lost once more from the annals of time.

Just as the trail of the relic appeared to have run cold, it somehow found its way into the possession of the Master Necromancer Lady Joliette Thorne, also called 'Tenebrae'. The Lady Tenebrae studied its contents for a period of nearly a year before the seemingly cursed item was unexpectedly stolen from her possession. It seemed as if no one was destined to possess the powerful tome for any meaningful length of time...

The legendary grimoire's location remained unknown for some time yet again, though its arcane pages would once again find their way back into a Master's hands as the book was finally discovered and claimed by the Eldermage Tiphareth, solidifying the aged Drow's path toward his long-time goal of becoming a Lich. With the power and ancient magic contained within, Tiphareth had all the tools required for the ensuing transformation. The Lichdrow has not made public his possession of the artifact, and has kept the whereabouts a secret known only unto himself.
