Physiology

Faerie dragons are small dragons, not considered true dragons, roughly the size of a housecat with butterfly (fairy) wings instead of the bat-like wings dragons more commonly have. Their abilities also vary from other dragons in accordance with their fey-like tendency toward mischief.

Unlike true dragons, faerie dragons do not grow larger with age, but their scales do change color, starting with red and moving through the rainbow to reach dark violet at old age. Faerie dragons grow in power as spellcasters as they age (typically gaining sorcery abilities), learning more powerful spells to complement their innate abilities. The spells of faerie dragons tend to focus on tools that can be used to create or enhance pranks, and illusion and enchantment spells are particularly popular.

Culture and Psychology

Faerie dragons are whimsical, playful pranksters that spend most of their time either relaxing in cool forest glades or engaged in some sort of prank. Although such mischief is usually spontaneous, some faerie dragons have been known to spend months or even years in preparation of one truly spectacular joke. Travelers making their way through lands known to be inhabited by these good-natured – but sometimes annoying – tricksters are advised to keep up their guard lest they face all manner of creative annoyances (horses painted with berry juice, squirrels placed inside bedrolls, and clothing decorating high branches being a few examples).

They are rarely hostile, and avoid combat unless there is no other option. If forced to fight, faerie dragons attempt to confound enemies rather than kill them, using both spells and breath weapon to weaken and scatter foes before fleeing. The only exception to this is when a faerie dragon’s clan or allies are in danger. As capricious as these tiny dragons can be, many prove quick to bond with goodly creatures, especially fey and others they find interesting or hilarious – adventurers often fall into this latter camp, particularly those most outraged by a faerie dragon’s tricks.

Faerie dragons sometimes ally with spellcasters, serving as curious, occasionally reckless, but always true familiars.

Physical and Magical Abilities

'Breath Weapon': A Faerie dragons' breath is actually quite beautiful, and consists of large cone that resembles a swirling rainbow emitting Pixie Dust. If effects those exposed to it in different ways. Many experience euphoria, others an overwhelming sense of bliss, while still others experience more unfortunate effects such as overwhelming fear, horror or delusions.

'Bite': The Faerie Dragon's bite may cause the target to fall into a state of delirium for up to an hour.

'Sting': The Faerie Dragon's tail has a potent poison that may cause the victim to fall Unconscious for the an hour, or until it takes damage or another creature shakes it awake. Those who resist falling unconscious are often hindered by general weakness and slow reaction times.

'Keen Senses': The Faerie Dragon has the advantage of exceedingly heightened sight, hearing, and smell.

'Magic Resistance': Strong resistance against spells and other magical effects.

'Shape shifting': While other dragons may change their forms into humanoids, the Faerie Dragon does not seem to have the same ability. They are able to change their forms, but never into anything larger than they normally are. On some occasions, they have become smaller than their original form, however. It is a topic of discussion among druids that the Faerie Dragon may not be able to shape shift at all, and when appearing as something else (most often a pixie) they are actually using a glamour or illusion to appear so. Largely their abilities, physical or otherwise, do not seem to change when they take another form. Note: it's undecided whether or not they have true shape-shift abilities. More information coming.

'Limited Telepatyy': The Faerie Dragon can magically communicate simple ideas, emotions, and images only telepathically with any creature within 100 ft. of it that can understand a Language. (They cannot read minds.)

'Variant: Familiar': The Faerie Dragon can serve another creature as a familiar, forming a magic, Telepathic Bond with that willing companion. While the two are bonded, the companion can sense what the Faerie Dragon senses as long as they are within 1 mile of each other. While the if the dragon is within 10 feet of its companion, the companion shares the faerie dragon's Magic Resistance trait. At any time and for any reason, the Faerie Dragon can end its service as a familiar, ending the Telepathic Bond.
