Brooch of the Shade - (Clothing-Neck)
Creator: The Order of the Shade
Last Known Owner: This is not IC knowledge. Krice looted it from a yuan-ti.
Description:

A darkened ruby set in an ornate frame of hematite. Originally used to clasp a piwafwi, but may be used to close any cloak, or may be worn as a pin or hair ornament as well. When wearing the brooch, the owner will not possess a heat signature. That is to say that to those who possess infrared vision will be unable to see the wearer. To the common eye, the individual will appear as an undead human.

History:

The brooch’s genesis is shrouded in mythology, peppered with historical fact backed by little evidence. As the legend goes, over 2,000 years ago, when the matriarchal grip on power was enjoying its lengthy peak, the five male mages of the first five houses began experimenting in the art of necromancy. They met in secret and called themselves The Order of the Shade. For several decades The Order remained a secret from the Matrons, but eventually the mages’ growing power inspired plots to usurp the Matron’s power, and their bold ambitions exposed them to discovery. The first five Matrons publicly burned the mages alive, then hung their corpses from spider silk cocoons over their estate’s grand entrances as a warning to the drow public. As the corpses swung from the stalactites above, rumor spread like faerie fire on the ground below. It was whispered that before the Matrons intervened, the mages had created a magical set of five items. Through the corrupting influence of the undead being, Caluss, these items once held the capacity to change an individual into a Wraith- in the instance all 5 were collected. Yet, once Caluss was defeated, his Necrotic influence was dispersed from the items, leaving their enchantments faded- waiting for a worthy successor to reignite even a vestige of their former glory.

Alleged Set: The most convincing lore and evidence, for those inclined to believe this myth, points to the following as the full set.

The first forged the Signet of the Shade, a signet ring bearing the seal of the Order of the Shade.

The second item is the Brooch of the Shade, used to clasp a piwafwi at the base of the throat.

The third enchanted the Boots of the Shade.

The fourth blessed the Whip of the Shade, but in truth the whip is a riding crop used when mounting lizards for sport, a practice which today has fallen out of fashion.

The final, and rumoured most powerful, mage chose to enchant the Crown of the Shade.
