History:

The Blade of the Grandfather is a blade dating back hundreds of years. The tale starts with a pair of twin brothers living in a town far from the realm known as Hollow. The brothers names were Erytil and Erusel, though their last names are long forgotten.

Erusel was the first born of the twins, he was very small and still borne. As such, he was quickly sat aside as the nurse-maid serviced his mother who was crowning her second son. When Erytil emerged, the nursemaid cleaned the young boy off and sat him in the cradle next to Erusel. The boys' mother was doing very badly after the emergence of the pair. Screams echoed down the road of the small town, the woman's breathing was heavily labored. After two more hours of agony, the woman passed on. This was sad yes, but quickly eclipsed by the miracle at hand – The first born child was breathing once again, laying close to his kin.

The two boys grew up with no mother in their house. They were watched closely by their father, the village blacksmith. Erytil was strong like their father, but Erusel was constantly plagued with sickness and fever. There was something curious about the older boy, there was some power about him that was unsettling. All of the townsfolk talked about the boy in passing, in fact, the only one who did not seem unsettled by the boy was his bother, Erytil. The two boys were very close and this continued until the day their father returned from a trip that had found him away for over a fortnight.

The day their father returned, the two were granted news that would change both of their life-paths and send the brothers in separate directions. First, their father announced that he was growing to be an old man, his joints were beginning to ache, and as such, he could no longer continue being the head smith of the town. The father announced that he would be passing this off to Erytil, the stronger of the boys, the boy who had shown the most interest in learning the family trade. Erusel sat quietly as this was announced, happy for his brother, though not allowing his joy to be apparent.

The father then turned his attention to his eldest son. He explained that for some time he had known that Erusel had no interest in the family trade. He also explained, that he was aware that the boy held a power that was uncultivated but quite apparent, a power that would be wasted if his son were to stay in the small town with the simple villagers – The boys' father had been away for more than a fortnight securing Erusel's position as a pupil at one of the nearest mage towers, hundreds of miles from home. Again Erusel was joyful, though his face remained expressionless. Erytil, hearing the news, reacted much differently, upset to see his brother go.

After Erusel departed, the brothers did not see each other for some time. While Erusel was away, Erytil honed his skill, soon he was one of the greatest blacksmiths in the region. Warlords would travel far and wide to purchase one of the brother's blades, so fine crafted they were. Ten years this continued, until one day, a lithe figure garbed in black robes walked down the main stretch of the town. The people whispered as the stranger passed, they whispered as they had when he was a boy – Erusel had returned from the mage's tower. Soon he stood in the doorway of his brother's shop. Erytil looked up with a kind smile, greeting his silent brother warmly.

Erusel stayed for only one night. The two brothers reminisced, and Erytil was informed that his brother had been granted his own mage's tower. At this young of an age, this was a large accomplishment and Erytil smiled a proud smile as he congratulated his kin. Shortly after this, the younger of the twins presented Erusel with a sword made especially for him. The name of the sword was Calagari. After this the brothers again parted ways; their paths were separate and a long distance away from one another. Erusel returned to his tower with the sword. Erytil was sad to watch him go, though, for the first time, felt much like the townsfolk: unsettled by his kin...

Ten years passed and Erusel found himself at war with one of the lesser gods of magic, an entity long forgotten, with a name faded forever away. The two warred for two decades before the fighting came to an end. During the decades the two great forces were at war Erusel was perfecting new spells, spells of such wonder the world had never seen. All whispered of the mad mage, locked in his tower, waging a war with an immortal. People that lived near the site soon moved, leaving only a wasteland around the besieged structure. Still the mage fought on, perfecting his spells.

Soon however, the god made a massive push, worried of a rumored god-killing spell the mage was conceiving. This final attack was all that was needed – Showing his mercy after defeating the man, the god offered the mortal a place in his legions. The mage replied he would rather die than serve any god, and so the tower crumbled with its master trapped inside. All of the mage's spell books were buried and forgotten, as was the sword gifted to him by his brother.

The sword Caligari faded from history after this battle and was not seen for some hundreds of years. It resurfaced when a man appeared in the land of Hollow wielding a blackened blade. The man was a vampire warlord known as Xzar and he wielded a sword made of dark metals, a sword known as Abode. The vampire had acquired the sword in one of his many ventures outside the land of Hollow and was not aware of the sword's history, of the two brothers, of the weapon and its previous owner's fate. Xzar had renamed the sword Abode when he had acquired it and it was known only by that name then on.

The sword's new owner however, met a fate much like the fate of its first owner. Perhaps it is the curse of the eager man, of one striving for power. Attempting to vanquish a warlord plaguing the lands of Hollow, the vampire, Xzar, fell on the field of battle. The sword, now known as Abode, again disappeared from knowledge.

When the blade reappeared in the land of Hollow, it was in the hands of a white haired young man who remembered very little of his existence. The boy was young and timid, though intelligent, and was always seen wearing a blindfold. Miraculously, the boy could read due to a small bird companion strangely connected to the lad, the boy read any history that he could find of his sword. Little was found, though the boy did find mention of the vampire, Xzar in a single book. Believing the daughter of the warlord to be his mother, the boy began to call the sword 'the blade of his grandfather.' Shortly after this discovery, the boy went mad and disappeared. Once again, the sword faded from knowledge.

When the boy returned to Hollow he no longer wore the blindfold he once had and peered a the world with two swirling sapphire eyes. The child had grown into a young man, a man whose mind had long slipped into the oblivion of insanity. The white haired lad had found much in his journeys however and had now adopted a name for himself – The mad man was then known as Erusel, a name he adopted from a book he had long forgotten the purpose of...

The one known as Erusel terrorized the moors of Hollow for some time, his mad banshee wails plagued city streets as murdered little girls were dragged through town squares. People stopped leaving their homes at night for fear of the mad man wielding the blacken blade. Many were slain before the crazy terror was killed in battle.

This time, the blade simply exchanged hands, becoming the weapon of the mad man's daughter, a little girl by the name of Verse...
